OptinMonster vs Unbounce

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and Unbounce
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

Which Is Right for You?

Are you in the market for software that can help you boost conversions and increase sales? If so, chances are you’ve come across two companies: OptinMonster and Unbounce.

And while they may appear similar at first glance, the truth is that each software is focused on different aspects of your marketing strategy.

So to make sure that you’re getting the right tools for the job you need, we’re going to look at OptinMonster vs. Unbounce to help you determine which company is right for you. More specifically, we’re going to compare:

  1. Campaign creation
  2. Campaign targeting and triggers
  3. Integrations

And then we’ll conclude this article with a small overall review of each company so you can make the final decision.

But before we do any of that, let’s get a global perspective on how OptinMonster and Unbounce place their focus on either optin campaigns or landing pages and why that difference matters to you.

Optin Campaigns vs. Landing Pages: What’s the Difference?

You may think that optin campaigns and landing pages are the same things. Both increase email signups, inform your audience about cool promotions, and boost overall sales.

In other words, both can be pretty awesome tools. So what’s the difference?

Landing pages are great because they’re informative and come in different forms. You can have:

  • Squeeze pages
  • Pre-sell pages
  • Sales pages
  • Product launches
  • Demo pages

Or just about anything else that you want to draw specific attention to. They’re given a special place on your website, and you drive traffic to them through either organic content marketing or paid ads.

Optin campaigns are similar, but with a crucial difference: they don’t have a specific URL on your site.

Instead, you can embed optin campaigns on any page of your website and target them to a particular niche in your audience.

So if you want to show a promotion only to your site’s visitors in a specific time zone, for instance, you can do that. Or if you want to show an optin campaign to people who are more engaged with your site, you can do that as well.

How? By setting various triggers to your optin campaign. Something you can’t do with landing pages.

Alright, so now the big question: What does any of this have to do with OptinMonster vs. Unbounce?

In a word, everything.

That’s because Unbounce focuses on creating landing pages for your site. Then they offer a limited amount of optin campaigns as a helpful side product.

OptinMonster does the exact opposite. We specialize in creating optin campaigns to boost conversions. But, those same campaigns can also function as versatile landing pages, too.

More on that in a bit.

Now don’t get us wrong. We don’t think that optin campaigns are necessarily better than landing pages. Again, both are super important to your marketing strategy.

But we do think that optin campaigns are more powerful, offer better targeting, and can still accomplish everything a traditional landing page does.

Ok, so maybe optin campaigns are better. 😉

This is important to understand as we go into our OptinMonster vs. Unbounce review. We need to be clear up front because we’ll be discussing how each software builds your optin campaigns.

Without further ado, let’s get into the good stuff!

OptinMonster vs. Unbounce: Campaign Creation

The ability to create custom campaigns to target the right audience is crucial for the conversion optimization software you choose.

Both OptinMonster and Unbounce allow you to select and edit pre-made templates or build campaigns from scratch.

Let’s take a look at the types of campaigns you can build with each tool and how easy it is to customize them.

Campaign Types

As we already mentioned, Unbounce offers optin campaigns as a “side product.” You can build them with Unbounce, but it’s safe to say that optin campaigns are far from their primary focus.

That means your choice for campaign type is limited. In fact, you only have two: popups and sticky bars.

Unbounce Optin Campaign Types min

OptinMonster, on the other hand, specializes in creating optin campaigns. So it should be no surprise that we have more options. You can build:

  • Lightbox Popups
  • Floating bars
  • Inline forms
  • Sidebar forms
  • Slide-in scrolls boxes
  • Content lockers
  • Coupon Wheel Optins
  • Fullscreen welcome mats
OptinMonster Campaign Types min

We’ll be checking out that last one in more detail later. Fullscreen welcome mats are the campaign that can also be used as flexible landing pages.

Right off the bat, in terms of who offers more optin campaign types, OptinMonster comes out the clear winner.

Now let’s look at what it’s like to build a campaign with both software. To be fair, we’ll use a popup campaign for this OptinMonster vs. Unbounce comparison because both companies offer this service.

Campaign Templates

When you create a popup campaign with Unbounce, you have 42 templates to choose from. You can filter these by the following choices:

  • Popular
  • Name
  • Recent
Unbounce Campaign Filters min

If you’re new to Unbounce, however, the default Popular option has a list of all 42 templates and is your safest bet for choosing one.

This is important to note because these side filters are crucial to making sure you choose the right template. OptinMonster has over 50 templates to choose from and lets you filter by:

  • Device
  • Goals
  • Categories

All of these choices have subcategories that can be used to narrow in on the type of campaign you need. Even if you don’t know what you’re specifically looking for yet.

OptinMonster template filters min 1

Our goal is to help small to medium-sized businesses increase their conversions regardless of their marketing level. That means we want you to choose the right template regardless of if you’re a seasoned marketing vet or a total newbie.

But now, let’s choose a template from each company and see what it’s like to build a targeted optin campaign. For Unbounce, we’ll select one of their 9 templates that can be used to grow an email list called Instant Content Download.

This takes us to their campaign editor:

Unbouncd editor min

We’ll get into what all this stuff means in a minute.

Campaign Customization

Overall, we enjoy using Unbounce’s editor. It’s a real “what you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG) that is helpful to those who consider themselves “technologically challenged.”

You can drag and drop elements in the campaign and manipulate their placement with your cursor. That said, the elements you can add are limited when compared to OptinMonster.

With Unbounce, you can add:

  • A new section
  • Box
  • Text
  • An image
  • Button
  • Form
  • Video
  • Custom HTML
Unbounce Elements min

Though we’re going to take a deeper look at OptinMonster’s campaign editor shortly, let’s compare elements you can add with our software:

  • 7 custom types of columns
  • Button
  • Chatbox
  • Countdown timer
  • Divider
  • Icons
  • Images
  • Optin fields
  • Spacers
  • Text
  • Videos
  • Yes/No options (more on that soon)
  • Custom HTML
OptinMonster Element Blocks min

The idea is simple: to let our users create the exact type of campaign that will achieve their marketing goals.

As we look back at Unbounce’s editor, there’s 1 thing in particular that our team found frustrating: the size of the editor while you’re making changes.

Here’s why:

The size of the editor will vary depending on your computer screen. But they have columns of editing tools on both the right and left-hand sides of the campaign you’re working on.

That means if you’re working on a standard laptop without a larger monitor, you may need to scroll back and forth to see your optin campaign as a whole. For example, here’s what the editor looks like if your browser window isn’t fullscreen:

Unbounce editor too small min

And here’s the same view of OptinMonster editor in the exact same size window:

OptinMonster editor wide and easy to see min

This may sound like a small detail, but it is frustrating if you’re trying to customize your campaign with special images, videos, or your campaign’s copy.

You can always close Unbounce’s editing tools to see the whole campaign, but then you lose the tools! With OptinMonster, everything is located on the left-hand side while you’re editing:

OptinMonster editor lefthand side min

Ok, now let’s take a closer look at OptinMonster’s campaign editor. Again, when it comes to the number of elements you can add with OptinMonster, there’s no contest. We’ve got way more options to choose from.

Plus, our editor is drag and drop as well. You simply select the element that you want to add to your campaign and drop it in place.

Add a block to OptinMonster design min

This takes the hassle out of design frustration and keeps everything looking sleek, sharp, and professional.

But there’s more. From the editor, you can turn any template into a Yes/No campaign. Something you can’t do with Unbounce.

At the top of your editor, click Yes/No, and switch the toggle to activate the new page in the left-hand side menu, and voila!

OptinMonster Yes No Campaign 1

You now have a fully functional Yes/No campaign template ready to rock. Why does that matter?

Because Yes/No campaigns are super effective.

There’s a psychological principle called the Zeignarik effect that suggests people tend to finish a process when they’ve started. By adding a Yes/No page to your campaign, you can pose a simple yes or no question to your audience.

When they click yes, they are more likely to finish by opting into your offer.

InternetSuccessGids, for example, boosted optins by 250% with Yes/No campaigns. Seriously, they’re like magic.

With Unbounce, you can custom create Yes/No forms, but it takes some coding skills to get started. There isn’t a template, as far as we found, that allows you to take a regular campaign and make use of the killer Yes/No feature.

Finally, OptinMonster’s editor makes it simple to customize the Success page, as well. Simply click “Success” on the top part of your editor, and you can:

  • Deliver a warm “thank you” to your new subscribers
  • Deliver content or promotions on the spot
  • Redirect your users to wherever you would like
Success View for OptinMonster min

Every template with OptinMonster allows you to have a Yes/No page, an optin page, and a success page out-of-the-box with all of our campaign types.

This isn’t the case with Unbounce.

So what’s the verdict when it comes to campaign type, template, and customization for OptinMonster vs. Unbounce?

We won’t pull any punches here. OptinMonster knocks it out of the park, and it’s not even close.

Campaign Targeting and Triggers

One of the biggest advantages of optin campaigns is how highly targeted they are. Rather than sending your visitors to a URL, as you would for a landing page, you can show your visitors an optin campaign on any page of your site.

And you can show them to visitors who meet certain criteria. We call those targets and triggers. But there’s a small difference between the two.

Targets refer to something specific about the visitor, such as their location, URL history, or browser page.

Triggers, on the other hand, are a specific action a user takes, such as trying to close the browser or scrolling to a certain percentage of your page.

But both have the same goal: making sure that your optin campaign is getting to the right person at the right time to make the message as effective as possible.

So let’s see how Unbounce’s triggers and targeting features stack up to OptinMonster when it comes to optin campaigns.

Once you’ve created your campaign with Unbounce, you need to enter the URL for the page that you want it to appear on:

Then you can choose from a variety of triggers, including when a visitor:

  • Arrives on your page
  • Stays on your page for X amount of seconds
  • Tries to exit a page
  • Scrolls up your page
  • Scrolls down you page X percent
  • Clicks a specific ID portion of your page’s code
Unbounce Targeting min

With OptinMonster, however, you can set all of these triggers (except for scrolling up a page) and a lot more. On top of the list of triggers we just saw with Unbounce, you can also set triggers for visitors who:

  • Have become inactive on a page
  • Have made a purchase
  • Clicks a MonsterLink™ (no code required)
  • Hover their mouse over a certain object
OptinMonster Conditions min

Ok, so OptinMonster has more triggers. What about targets? Well, we’ve got more of those too. Here’s a list of targets that both companies allow you to use:

  • Geolocation
  • Page-level targeting
  • Current URL paths
  • New vs. returning users
  • Referral detections
  • URL parameters
  • Specific cookies
  • OS/Browser based targeting
  • How often the same user sees your campaign

OptinMonster has many specific targeting options that Unbounce doesn’t feature. Targeting rules offered by OptinMonster include:

  • Number of pages viewed
  • Past visited URL path
  • WordPress tags
  • Campaign interactions
  • Visitors with adblockers
  • URL anchor texts (using MonsterLinks™)
  • Device-based targeting
  • Ecommerce cart contents
  • Ecommerce cart value

Now, to be fair, you can accomplish some of these targets with your Unbounce campaigns if you’re good with code. So keep in mind that we’re only talking about what you can achieve without diving into JavaScript, CSS, or HTML.

An excellent example of this is a comparison of Unbounce’s Click Trigger and OptinMonster’s MonsterLinks™. While both allow you to trigger a campaign for when visitors click a part of your page, Unbounce is more technical to set up.

To do this in Unbounce, you need to enter an ID, CSS selector, or class from your web property. And if you don’t know what any of that means, then you understand why we say it’s harder to do with Unbounce.

Unbounce OnClick Trigger min

OptinMonster’s MonsterLink™ is a matter of copy/pasting a link that we generate and assigning it to any element of your webpage such as a button, an image, or an anchor text.

MonsterLinks min

You can copy this link to your clipboard and add it to email marketing campaigns, social media posts, or in your content.

Again, much simpler.

OptinMonster vs. Unbounce: Native Integrations

If you’re using an email service provider to automate your email marketing strategy, you’ll need to get the leads from your optin forms into your email list. For that, you’ll need to make sure your email service provider integrates with OptinMonster or Unbounce.

So let’s see what both services offer in terms of native integrations.

Unbounce gives you the following native integrations:

  • Active Campaign
  • AWeber
  • Campaign Monitor
  • Constant Contact
  • Email Notifications
  • Hubspot
  • Infusionsoft
  • MailChimp
  • Marketo
  • SalesForce
  • Speak2Leads
Native Integrations with Unbounce min

This means Unbounce offers you a total of 11 email service provider integrations.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, offers you a total of 34 native integrations for email service providers! It has all the major players for our clients’ needs with a large variety of other options to hedge your bets.

In other words, OptinMonster is more than 3x more likely to have the email service integration you’re looking for already hooked up.

And if you don’t find yours, you can add it to work with any marketing tools you currently use.

The verdict? The numbers speak for themselves on this one. It’s OptinMonster by a long shot.

OptinMonster vs. Unbounce: The Final Word

We started this article by showing how both companies focus on different aspects of lead generation. Unbounce focuses on creating landing pages and landing page templates.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, creates full-service optin campaigns.

So does that mean if you want to build landing pages, you should go with Unbounce? Not necessarily.

With OptinMonster’s fullscreen welcome mats or inline campaigns, you can turn any of our campaigns into a landing page, including a:

  • Squeeze page
  • Pre-sell page
  • Sales page
  • Product launch page

The difference? Our fullscreen landing page campaigns are more flexible because they aren’t tied to a specific URL. That means you can target these landing pages to visitors looking at any page on your website. If you want the landing page to be hosted on your site, just use an inline campaign and use the campaign embed code to add it to your site.

So if you have a piece of content that talks about a product, you can trigger your fullscreen campaign to popup when visitors get to that section of the page. Or, you can target only local users for any on-site promotions you’re running.

Or, you can… well, we think you get the point.

You can show these landing pages to the people who need to see them without trying to drive traffic to the URL itself.

This aspect of our campaigns tips the scales toward OptinMonster. And then there’s the pricing aspect.

Unbounce has three plans, all of which charge based on your site’s traffic:

  • $79/month for the Essential plan
  • $159/month for the Premium plan
  • $399+/month for the Enterprise plan
Unbounce Pricing Model min

OptinMonster, on the other hand, has 4 plans which charge by campaign impressions:

  • $14/month for the Basic plan
  • $30/month for the Plus plan
  • $47/month for the Pro plan
  • $80/month for the Growth plan
OptinMonster Pricing min

Not only is OptinMonster’s pricing more affordable, but it also makes more sense for small to medium-size businesses because we charge by campaign impressions.

It’s a small thing to consider but can have a significant impact on your price, depending on your situation. Here’s the difference in how the pricing models work:

  • Charging by traffic means you could pay more even if your campaigns aren’t seen by your audience (because you have visitors who may not trigger your campaign)
  • Charging by impressions means your price increases along with the number of people seeing your actual campaigns

So if you’re a smaller or medium-sized business trying to get the best bang for your buck, you want to be charged by impressions, not overall traffic.

The bottom line? You need to remember that both companies were created with different focuses in mind. Unbounce is all about landing pages. OptinMonster is all about optin campaigns, which include the potential for custom landing pages, but don’t focus on it.

That means if you’re looking for a software with:

  • More types of campaigns
  • More templates
  • More options for customizing your campaign
  • More targeted campaigns
  • More triggers
  • More flexibility
  • More email integrations
  • More functionality with Yes/No campaigns
  • Less expensive

Then OptinMonster is clearly the choice for you.

Plus, it’s important to consider that OptinMonster is just better suited for driving traffic, growing your email list, and boosting conversion rates without needing any coding skills.

In other words, you get a lot more 💥 for your 💰.

OptinMonster vs Sleeknote

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and Sleeknote
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

Which Is Right for You?

Are you looking for a software that can help you drive traffic, boost leads, and increase conversion rates? If so, you’ve probably come across many companies.

Two popular options that often pop up are OptinMonster and Sleeknote. Both do a great job of helping small to medium-sized businesses grow their email list. That said, there are some substantial differences between the two software.

So, in this OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote comparison, we’re going to look at the following aspects of each company:

  1. Campaign types
  2. Campaign design
  3. Campaign targeting and triggers
  4. Email service provider integrations
  5. Documentation and support
  6. OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote: Which is best for you?

Let’s get started.

OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote: Campaign Creation

So here’s the thing with Sleeknote that we should get out of the way right up front: our entire team is a big fan of their marketing strategy and their web design.

They’ve done a great job branding, and it’d be wrong to say otherwise. So as we would expect, Sleeknote’s campaign building process is detailed, intuitive, and easy to understand.

They walk you through all 6 steps when it’s time to build your build campaign and force you to define your goals upfront.

That said, it quickly becomes obvious that Sleeknote’s campaign options are more limited than OptinMonster.

This is evident as soon as it’s time to choose your campaign type:

Sleeknote campaign type selection min

As you can see, you have 3 options for a campaign. To be more accurate, you have 2 options at this stage (and one more later, but we’ll get to that in a second).

  • Center screen popup
  • Slide-in on either the right or left-hand side

With OptinMonster, you have 5 different campaign types to choose from:

  • Popup
  • Fullscreen
  • Slide-in
  • Floating Bar
  • Inline
OptinMonster choose your campaign

But then with these 5 options, you can also build:

  • Sidebars
  • Spinning Wheel Optins
  • Content Lockers
  • Countdown Timers (static or dynamic)

You can show all of those campaigns through anchor texts with shareable MonsterLinks™. Another popular campaign type is a sidebar widget (mentioned in the list above) for optin forms on the side of your content.

You’ve probably seen those before. Sidebar optins look like this:

OptinMonster sidebar widget 1

Again, when it comes to OptinMonster campaign types, we’ve got loads to choose from!

This means that, right away, the scale tips toward OptinMonster for clients looking to build a variety of campaigns across their site or sites.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The very first thing that Sleeknote asks you to do is define your goal:

What do you want to use Sleeknote for

Your selection will determine which campaign templates you see. Choosing your goal upfront helps you get more clarity on what you want to achieve and helps you design a more targeted campaign throughout the entire process.

But what about the customers who want access to all the templates right from the get-go and have the ability to filter options if needed.

Because there may be a template that matches the campaign design you want, but you’d never see it if you chose the wrong goal.

That’s why at OptinMonster, our engineers created over 50 templates that we show you upfront. Then on the side, you can filter all those templates depending on your specific goals:

OptinMonster template filters min

We know you have a particular style in mind for your campaign, so we want to give you all the options to choose from if it can save you time.

Again, two different approaches, but a big enough consideration to mention here.

As we continue this comparison, we’re going to choose Sleeknote’s Center Screen Popup so we can Collect Email Addresses. Now, we can explore the templates.

Sleeknote has 50 templates to choose from (45 themed templates and 5 blank ones). They allow you to filter between themed and blank templates though we’re not 100% sure why this filter exists:

Sleeknote template selection min

It doesn’t change your options or simplify your template choice. If you want to see the blank templates, you can scroll to the bottom of the page.

There’s also another thing to point out at this stage. Only 3 of the 50 templates allow you to create a Multistep campaign (which is the equivalent of OptinMonster’s high converting Yes/No campaign):

Sleeknote multistep selection min

This is important because Yes/No optins are super effective.

They rely on the Zeigarnik effect, which suggests that people are more likely to finish a process once they’ve started. So if you ask your wesbite visitors a simple Yes or No question, they’re more likely to engage with the campaign:

OptinMonster Yes No Campaign 2

Consequently, there’s a good chance they’ll finish by opting in because they’ve already begun the process of doing so.

That’s why OptinMonster allows you to make any template a Yes/No campaign. It turns most site visitors into subscribers. So out of all our 50+ templates, you can use the power of the Zeigarnik effect with all of them!

Making the transition to a Yes/No campaign is how ChinaImportal boosted webinar attendance by 18%, subscriber growth by 200%, and recovered 11% of abandoned visitors.

We’ll show you how we can help you do that in just a minute.

Today, we’ll choose a Multistep campaign from Sleeknote so we can explore everything as thoroughly as possible. Now it’s time to decide whether you want your campaign to be at the center of the screen, or on the bottom left or right-hand side (like we saw earlier):

Sleeknote campaign type selection min 1

Again, we’ll go with Center.

Ok, in Sleeknote, we’re shown the Multistep campaign, and we can begin editing. This multistep feature was frustrating. That’s because it’s broken down into 4 steps:

  • Form I
  • Form II
  • Teaser
  • Success

Here’s Form I of the template we chose:

Form I from Sleeknote min

You’ll notice that right away, your reader is asked to put in their email address. This defeats the purpose of a multistep optin, and, in a second, we’ll explain why. First, here’s a glimpse of Form II:

Form II from Sleeknote min

Form II’s default template asks for a name, phone number, and, for some reason, gender. We can’t imagine a scenario in which this default template meets the majority of their user’s needs without major customization.

So, why does asking for an email in Form I defeat the purpose of a Yes/No (or “multistep”) campaign?

Because the first part of a Yes/No campaign should be as simple as possible with zero information to fill in. After all, that’s what gives these campaigns their power.

Again, notice the first step from one of OptinMonster’s Yes/No campaigns:

Yes No Campgaign is simple with OM

The user is prompted to click Yes or No.

The goal is to get them to take a tiny action so they can warm up to the idea of giving their email address later. Once the email is obtained, if our users need more information, we teach them how to use progressive profiling to get it.

The point is this: each field you ask your users to fill out is another obstacle that can prevent them from doing so.

Put even more simply, more fields = fewer conversions (and vice-versa).

Here’s the second part of our Yes/No campaign for that same template:

Yes No Campaign Optin Form OM

Again, this is as stripped down as can be. Once the user has clicked through the Yes option, they’re asked to provide basic details about themselves, like name and email address.

You can always customize this form to collect more information if you need it, but the default will work out-of-the-box. In fact, our clients have found that most of our templates need very little (if any) customization before putting them on a website.

But not everything about Sleeknote’s template was frustrating. In fact, there was one part that caught our team’s attention (in a good way). Their third form is called a teaser and is a nice addition to their software.

It looks like this:

Teaser from Sleeknote

The teaser is like a miniature version of your campaign at the bottom of their screen. This functions like a Floating Bar from OptinMonster:

OptinMonster Footer min

It’s essentially a 2-step optin that gets users to click something before they see the optin form. This, too, takes advantage of the Zeigarnik effect. With OptinMonster, though, Floating Bars aren’t the only way to use a 2-step optin.

You can also use Inline campaigns or shareable MonsterLinks™.

Both of these options allow you to make smaller campaigns throughout your site and encourage higher click-through rates. Then, once a customer has started the process, they’re more likely to finish.

However, neither of these options are offered by Sleeknote.

Finally, we have the Success page view. This is standard across both platforms. They both allow you to send a warm message to your customers, provide discount or coupon information, or redirect users to a different site.

Success view OM min

So now, let’s move away from the types of campaigns you can build with OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote and look at design customization features.

OptinMonter vs Sleeknote: Campaign Design

In terms of how to customize your campaign with OptinMonster or Sleeknote, our editors are similar. Both have a drag and drop editor with user-friendly customization.

One of the many benefits of OptinMonster is the variety of elements you can add to your drag and drop builder. For this area of campaign design, OptinMonster goes far beyond what Sleeknote allows you to do.

First, let’s look at what Sleeknote lets you add to your campaign’s layout:

  • Text
  • Image
  • Divider
  • Container
  • Countdown
  • Button

Then they have a few form options that you can add, including:

  • Input
  • Numeric
  • Dropdown menu
  • Checkboxes
  • Radios
  • Text area

With OptinMonster, you have all of these options and more! Here are the Blocks you can add to any template design (or when building from scratch!):

  • Button
  • Chatbot
  • Countdown (static or dynamic)
  • Divider
  • Custom HTML
  • Icons
  • Images
  • Spacer
  • Text
  • Video
  • Yes/No buttons
  • Optin fields
    • Name
    • Email
    • Phone number
    • Privacy policy statement
Blocks for OM min

NoteThat custom HTML makes this list unlimited. You can design your campaign to do pretty much anything and are only limited by your JavaScript skills.

But as you can see, we have you covered for anything you could need for your optin campaign.

Plus, where Sleeknote offers a “Container” as an option to put into your campaign, OptinMonster offers many versions called “Columns:”

Columns with OptinMonster min

These allow for more personalized campaigns than any single column addition. But how can you target your customers once you’ve built the perfect optin form?

Campaign Targeting and Triggers

When it comes to creating custom rules to display your campaign, there’s no beating OptinMonster, and Sleeknote is no exception.

And let’s be clear: this is nothing against Sleeknote. OptinMonster has the advantage of having been around for many years and working hard to make our campaigns as targeted as possible.

It’s one of the areas where our software shines brightest, and there’s not a competitor on the market who can outperform us there.

That said, Sleeknote does have a few good options for targeting campaigns:

  • Timed (which can be customized)
  • Scroll depth
  • Exit-Intent®
  • Click
  • Custom JavaScript triggers
Sleeknote Triggers min

They also have a Smart Trigger functionality that tracks your most popular campaigns and then shows them accordingly. While this is good in theory, we recommend never taking your hands off the wheel like this.

Like self-driving cars, it sounds cool until something crashes. There’s no better way to target your audience than monitoring, tracking, and tweaking your campaigns over time after seeing what your visitors engage with most.

Then Sleeknote has a variety of conditions to personalize when these campaigns are triggered, including:

  • URL rulesets
  • Geo-targeting
  • URL paths
  • Page count
  • Times a campaign has been viewed
  • Site data
  • Newsletter subscribers
  • New visitors
  • Return visitors
  • UTM parameters
  • Cookies
  • Queries
  • Referrals
  • HTML detection rules

As we played around with creating rulesets, there was one thing that bothered us from a user’s standpoint. The trigger default is set to Timed (for 7 seconds), which is fine. But the following condition by default is set to Hide Campaign If in smaller writing:

Hide-campaign-if-Sleeknote

When you change the first default condition, you want to make sure you’re setting it to hide specific campaigns rather than Show If. When it’s your first time creating a campaign with Sleeknote, this small detail can lead to building a campaign that is hidden from the people you want to see it most.

If you would like to set a Show If campaign, then you need to activate those conditions further down the screen.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, has all of these triggers and more. Plus, they are organized more intuitively.

In fact, there are too many triggers to list here because OptinMonster has over 30 unique triggers for each campaign, each of which has its own sub-conditions to make the targeting more accurate for your audience.

In other words, we have the same triggers as Sleeknote and more.

One of the examples of unique targeting tools that stands out is our AdBlocker, which helps display campaigns to your users who may have ad blocking software.

OptinMonster adblocker

All too often, clients build campaigns with one of our competitors only to learn that the majority of their traffic never even sees the campaign!

We’ve worked hard to make sure that our campaigns reach the right people, at the right time, with the right message. That includes getting around ad blocking software, which is crucial for lead generation.

Some other targeting options OptinMonster gives you that are not available with Sleeknote include:

  • Advanced targeting by date and time
  • WordPress and Smart Tags
  • URL anchor text

Again, with OptinMonster, you can rest assured that your campaigns will be seen by the exact type of client you’re targeting.

Now that we’ve created, designed, and made rules for our campaign, let’s compare how many email service provid

OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote: Integrations and Support

Once you have your leads, most marketers want to store them in their email marketing service. That way, they can feed the leads into an automated email series to nurture the relationship and grow a solid base of lifelong customers.

As of right now, Sleeknote is more limited in the number of integrations they offer. They currently have 14 email provider integrations available. We should also mention that some of these are small companies such as Apsis, Dot Digital, and Ubivox.

But to be fair, they do have a few of the bigger players like Mailchimp, Active Campaign, and HubSpot as well.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, offers over 35 integrations for all of your favorite email service providers.

Email Service Providers by OM

We also offer lead storage directly on our platform with Monster Leads so you can keep track of and monitor your new leads from OptinMonster.

The difference in the number of integrations offered is important to point out for two reasons.

First, it’s more likely that you’re going to have your current email service provider with OptinMonster than with Sleeknote. To be more accurate, you’re 2.5x more likely to find that we offer whichever email service provider you currently have.

But second, and more importantly, you may decide to change email service providers as your company grows. In fact, you should change email service providers as you scale.

Over time, your needs may change, and you may find another provider has a better offer to suit your email list building needs. When that’s the case, you want to make sure that you don’t paint yourself into a corner because your conversion optimization software doesn’t have the right integration.

So while it may seem less important now, we’ve found that many of our clients are happy to have as many options for their integrations as possible.

Documentation and Support

In this last section, we can’t do anything other than tip our hats to the team at Sleeknote. We started this post by saying how impressed we are with their marketing team.

That compliment extends to their thorough documentation and friendly support team, too.

While they don’t have many video-based tutorials, they have an extensive resource hub to help users troubleshoot any issues. It’s easy to navigate, detailed, and overall impressive.

They also have the following support features:

  • Blogs
  • Library
  • Webinar
  • Podcast
  • Free demos

When it comes to reaching their contact team, they have a live chat feature for questions. The live chat runs through standard business hours.

Otherwise, you can send them a message via their site, in an email, or (we suppose) write them a letter the good old fashioned way.

As for OptinMonster, we only hire people who are the absolute best at what they do.

And that includes our support team, too.

Our staff is trained to not just answer any and all questions our users have but to go out and hunt for answers if they aren’t sure.

This is true of people who reach out to us via Facebook, Twitter, email, live chat, or our YouTube channel.

Speaking of which, it’s our killer video tutorials that also set apart our support.

Our YouTube channel is jam-packed with tutorials that help you with every aspect of working with OptinMonster:

OptinMonster Youtube Channel min

Plus, many of those videos can be found in our documentation to save you time when you have trouble:

OptinMonste Adblock detected documentation

So what’s the verdict for support and documentation when it comes to OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote?

Sleeknote does this well. But our video tutorials and hand-picked support staff give OptinMonster the winning edge.

OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote: The Final Word

If we thought for a second that there was a product better than OptinMonster on the market, we’d be in the wrong business.

OptinMonster has more functionality, templates, email integrations, and triggers than any of our competitors, Sleeknote included.

And when it comes to price, we’re just as competitive as well.

Sleeknote currently has a 7-day trial. But after that, you’re looking at:

  • $55/month for their Basic package
  • $103/month for their Plus package
  • $255/month for Pro
  • $375/month for Premium
  • $599/month for Enterprise
Sleeknote pricing page

Now let’s check OptinMonster. With us, you have all of Sleeknote’s functionalities (and way more) for:

  • $14/month for Basic
  • $30/month for Plus
  • $47/month for Pro
  • $80/month for Growth

NoteThe pricing in the image above is from a promotion we’re currently running. You can see the original price underneath the red line. Or you can head over to our pricing page to see if the promotion is still available at the time you’re reading this!

Yes, you read those prices correctly. Our most comprehensive package is still less expensive than Sleeknote’s more limited Plus package. Comparing OptinMonster vs. Sleeknote’s functionality gives us the winning edge. Comparing our price to Sleeknote’s?

It’s not even a contest.

So when you look at each company’s capabilities, ease of use, and support, we think the verdict is pretty clear:

OptinMonster is and remains the world’s #1 optimization conversion toolkit by a landslide.

OptinMonster vs. Justuno

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and Justuno
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

Which Is Right for You?

Are you looking for the best way to grow your email list, reduce shopping cart abandonment, drive traffic to your site, and get higher conversion rates? If so, you’ve likely been shopping around for various conversion optimization kits.

Two popular choices you may have come across are OptinMonster and Justuno.

Both companies are dedicated to helping their users create powerful campaigns to strengthen their business. But while looking at each company’s services, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you.

And while OptinMonster and Justuno may seem similar from the outside, they are very unique products. As such, you should be aware of their features before choosing which one to go with.

That’s why we’ve created an in-depth OptinMonster vs. Justuno comparison to help you out. And yes, though we love our product here at OptinMonster, we’ll remain as unbiased as possible! 😉

Pressed for time? Feel free to use this table of contents to jump to the section that you want to learn about most:

  1. Campaign Creation
  2. Campaign Targeting and Triggers
  3. Documentation and Support
  4. OptinMonster vs. Justuno: Which Is Best for You?

Otherwise, grab a cup of coffee and get ready to learn which platform can bring you the most bang for your buck.

Let’s get started!

OptinMonster vs. JustUno: Pricing

Before we reach any conclusion, we know that pricing is a factor. So let’s take a quick look at what each service costs.

Justuno has two packages: Justuno and Justuno Plus, both of which are priced by traffic:

Justuno’s pricing looks like this when billed monthly:

  • $29/month for 10k traffic
  • $49/month for 20k traffic
  • $99/month for 50k traffic
Justuno pricing min

From there, pricing goes up as your traffic increases:

Justuno extra pricing min

Justuno Plus includes managed services and Commerce AI, an AI-powered product recommendation engine. Justuno Plus packages require a demo call, but you can expect it would be much higher than their standard package.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, has much more competitive pricing, even when billed monthly:

  • $19/month for Basic (3,500 page views)
  • $39/month for Plus (15,000 page views)
  • $59/month for Pro (50,000 page views)
  • $99/month for Growth (250,000 pageviews)
OptinMonster Pricing

Here’s another important difference to make: Justuno prices by website traffic whereas OptinMonster charges by campaign views.

And that’s a huge difference. Why?

Because if you’re creating targeted campaigns for your visitors, not all of your website’s traffic will see your optin campaigns. But with Justuno, you’re paying for that traffic either way.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, only charges for when campaigns are seen by your clients. So not only are we comparatively less expensive and offer more functionality, but we also make sure you’re getting your money’s worth by basing our pricing model on when you’re using our services.

OptinMonster vs. Justuno: Campaign Creation

For a lot of our users, building the right kind of campaign is crucial for growing their email list and driving conversions. Our clients want beautiful templates to start with, and an intuitive editor for customization.

So let’s begin our OptinMonster vs. Justuno comparison there.

Templates

When you start with Justuno, you need to choose your targeted device before deciding which template you’d like. They separate your options into Desktop/Tablet or Mobile:

Justuno campaigns desktop or mobile min

For today’s comparison, let’s go with Desktop/Tablet (though the template options look identical for both with a few formatting changes).

You then have your choice between 4 campaign types:

  • Fullscreen
  • Center
  • Banner
  • Corner/Edge
Justuno Campaign types min

We’ll choose a Center campaign because it’s the closest to a Lightbox Popup, which is one of our most popular campaigns here at OptinMonster.

From there, you can choose your goal. You can either:

  • Capture Leads
  • Message your users with campaigns, promotions, or other marketing reinforcements
Justuno lead capture or website messaging min

If you choose Lead Capture, you’ll be asked if you want a standard optin form or an introduction page as well.

As a reference, the introduction page with Justuno is the same as OptinMonster’s Yes/No feature. But we’ll talk about that later in the post.

And now you’re ready to choose your template:

Justuno Choose a template min

Justuno is more limited than OptinMonster in their choices here.

For their Featured templates, they have 11 options. And they have 15 templates under Email Capture (though some of these overlap their Featured themes).

And then they have a few templates for seasonal campaigns such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and so on.

Overall, you have a handful of quality templates to choose from, but certainly fewer options than OptinMonster.

One thing that we did like, though, was their live preview that lets you see the theme before deciding to customize it:

Justuno Preview min

OptinMonster, of course, offers that feature as well. In fact, it’s pretty standard for most lead generating software. The only downside to Justuno’s preview is that they open this in a new window and display the preview over their site’s background.

It’s not a big deal, but a little annoying to be redirected in the middle of choosing your campaign.

Once you’ve chosen a theme, you need to pick your audience:

Justuno Select your audience min

You also have the option to build your audience, if you’d like.

Finally, you get to design the campaign. You can either edit the features that were in the default template:

Justuno edit default

Or you can go to the canvas editor to make more custom changes:

Justuno go to design canvas min

One of Justuno’s strengths in the canvas editor is that it’s a true “what you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG). That means you can move things freely throughout the editor and have a good idea of what it will look like:

Justuno WYSIWYG min

You can also drag and drop elements into place. Plus, you have a wide variety of options to choose from.

Now, at the start of this article, we promised to be as unbiased as possible. And we’re happy to deliver on that promise.

Justuno has a nice drag and drop campaign builder with some excellent features you can put in your campaigns. In fact, out of all our competitors, their campaign was the most design-friendly.

In other words, Justuno did a great job with their canvas editor! So kudos to them.

Ok, now it’s our turn. 😉

When you decide to Create a New Campaign with OptinMonster, you have 5 campaign choices:

  • Popup
  • Fullscreen Welcome Mat
  • Slide-in Scroll Box
  • Floating Bar
  • Inline Forms
OptinMonster choose your campaign min 1

But you can also create sidebar widgets to make the perfect optin campaign stick to the side of your site’s content:

OptinMonster sidebar widget 1 min 1

Just from this alone, we can see that OptinMonster has more campaign choices than Justuno.

Once you choose your campaign type in OptinMonster, you can then select a template. Now, here’s the thing:

Our template selection is awesome.

Again, we want to remain as unbiased as possible, but there’s just no way around it. OptinMonster has over 50 templates to choose from, all of which can be filtered by goal and device:

OptinMonste choose your campaign type min

Plus, you can preview each template before selecting which one you’d like:

OptinMonster template preview

Another small thing to point out is that our previews are shown directly on the template selection page. That means you won’t be redirected, and no other windows will popup.

Which, again, can be annoying when you’re selecting your template.

Once you’ve chosen your template, you move to the editor:

OptinMonster campaign editor min

This is where you have tons of options for customization. Click on any element you want to change, and you can do so on the left-hand side menu:

OptinMonster lefthand side editing tools min

Stay TunedA WYSIWYG-style editor is on its way to OptinMonster, so keep your eyes peeled. 👀

Coming back to our current editor, you can always add or remove any elements you’d like. In our Blocks section, we have tons of options to customize any campaign:

Choose your block elements min

These include:

  • Buttons
  • Chatbots
  • Countdown timers
  • Dividers
  • Custom HTML
  • Icons
  • Images
  • Optin fields
  • Spacers
  • Text
  • Video
  • Yes/No blocks

These options allow you to build just about any campaign you’d like. And our Yes/No feature helps you turn these campaigns into super-efficient lead converters:

OptinMonster yes no editor

The Yes/No option allows people to optin faster by leveraging the Zeigarnik effect. This psychological principle suggests that people are more likely to finish the processes they’ve started.

When someone does something as simple as clicking Yes, they’re more likely to enter their email on the next page by finishing their signup.

The Verdict? OptinMonster has more options for templates and campaigns. And while Justuno has a good editor, they unfortunately have more limited templates and fewer options to customize triggers.

On that note, let’s take a look at how each platform lets you target your users.

Campaign Targeting and Triggers

Ok, so once you’ve created your campaign with Justuno, it’s time to build a ruleset for your triggers. To do that, you hit Create Trigger and then decide between a basic rule set or an advanced ruleset:

Create Rule set with justuno min

Since we’re going to do some advanced triggers with OptinMonster later, it would only be fair to do the same here. So we’ll choose the Advanced Ruleset. Now you’ll be taken to your Rule Library:

Justuno advanced ruleset min

As you can see on the right-hand side, you can add different rulesets for your custom campaign. You can target by:

  • URL
  • Visitor frequency
  • Geolocation/language
  • User engagement
  • Date & time
  • Various technological rules
  • Cart & past orders
  • Custom values

With OptinMonster, you can set the exact same triggers, with two crucial advantages: reCaptcha integration and overcoming adblocking technology.

One of the benefits of working with OptinMonster is the ability to easily add reCAPTCHA to your lead capture form. You’ve likely seen reCAPTCHA before:

Lead capture form with captcha min

This helps our clients prevent getting spammy leads. Bots can easily fill in most optin forms, so CAPTCHA adds a step that makes it difficult for these spambots to perform.

With CAPTCHA, you can rest assured that your leads are actual human beings. Not spam.

And then we get to the second and arguably most significant advantage of OptinMonster vs. Justuno:

We aren’t affected by ad blockers.

This is a huge distinction to make. Why? Because over 616 million devices use AdBlock or a similar service to prevent ads that you’ll build with sites like Justuno.

OptinMonster isn’t affected by ad blockers, which means your message will get to the right people every time.

And activating this feature with OptinMonster couldn’t be easier. You simply set up a Yes/No campaign that asks users to disable their adblocker. That would look something like this:

Adblock detected with OptinMonster min 1

Then you set the display rule to show your campaign directly to your audience who have ad blockers enabled:

OptinMonster adblocker min 1

That means the same technology that would prevent a Justuno campaign from appearing actually triggers OptinMonster campaigns to show up.

And 77% of visitors click Yes to disabling their AdBlock!

Why? Because most users are trying to prevent ads while they’re streaming their favorite shows from shady websites.

Ok, people use ad blockers for other reasons, but you get the point. Most online visitors are trying to block SPAM. They don’t want to block content and promotions that they’re actively engaging with.

That’s why OptinMonster made sure that our campaigns are unaffected by AdBlock technology.

The verdict? With OptinMonster and Justuno, you can target and trigger your audience very effectively. But with OptinMonster, you’re able to get 77% more campaign views from your audience who use ad-blocking technology. And, again, most of your site’s visitors probably do.

With that in mind, it’s safe to say that OptinMonster comes out ahead in this category, too.

OptinMonster vs. Justuno: Docs and Support

Sometimes when you’re working on building a campaign, you’ve got some questions. No worries, it happens to all of us.

Both OptinMonster and Justuno have various methods of support: blogs, YouTube channels, and email tickets.

But there are two differences between the companies when it comes to their documentation: live chat support and video tutorials.

OptinMonster has added live chat to their website. That means during regular business hours (9am–5pm EST), you can live chat with a representative to help solve your problems.

This is a big deal, especially if you have a time-sensitive campaign that you need help with.

Our customer support team is the best in the business. They’re experts in our technology and, above all, they just treat you like real human beings.

If you’re more of an autonomous learner, though, that’s fine too. Our documentation has videos embedded to help you crush whatever problem you’re having, all on your own.

We’ve found (and our clients have confirmed) that these videos are an effective supplement to the text provided in our answers. That’s why most of our documentation pages look like this:

OptinMonste Adblock detected documentation min

They have a helpful video first and in-depth response to your question afterward. More often than not, however, our short tutorials do the trick.

Justuno, on the other hand, has mostly text-based tutorials, which is ok, but not suited to all learning styles.

OptinMonster vs. Justuno: The Final Word

We recently came across a page from Justuno’s website claiming to be “the best OptinMonster alternative:”

Justuno competitor page min

Which, to be fair, is both flattering and accurate.

They probably are the best alternative to us, in the same way that the band Oasis is the best alternative to the Beatles. The former has some great hits, but the latter defines the market.

In other words, we appreciate Justuno acknowledging that we’re the industry standard. But we also don’t know why anyone would want to pay more money for an alternative.

To be fair, out of all of our competitors, Justuno has an editor that is easiest to use and that we enjoyed playing with the most.

Again, kudos to them!

But they still have a ways to go before catching up to our software. Because OptinMonster isn’t just another software to capture emails:

It’s an entire conversion optimization toolkit.

With OptinMonster, you can do everything from driving traffic, growing an email list, boosting affiliate sales, and pretty much anything else you need to boost revenue for your company.

You can do that through cool features like:

  • Fullscreen campaigns (that can also function as landing pages)
  • Content locking
  • Dynamic countdown timers
  • Promotional coupon distribution
  • Bypassing ad blocking software
  • Preventing spammy leads with CAPTCHA

And so much more!

The bottom line?

We enjoy playing around with Justuno. Their technology impresses us, but it’s far from intimidating us.

Because when you take into account our larger campaign base, our more targeted triggers, or the fact that OptinMonster isn’t affected by ad blocking technology, it’s simply a no-brainer.

Oh, and that doesn’t even take into account our more competitive pricing model.

I haven’t had a single complaint. My only regret is that I didn’t start using OptinMonster sooner. I can only imagine how many subscribers I could have added to my email list! If you have a blog, then I highly recommend you start using OptinMonster. I’ve researched them all, and it’s the best in market.

OptinMonster vs Thrive Leads

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and Thrive Leads
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

OptinMonster vs. Thrive Leads: Website Integration

One of the most important factors in choosing a lead generation solution is: what kind of website can you use it on?

Thrive Leads is a WordPress plugin, so you have to have a WordPress website to use it.

Thrive Leads Successfully Installed min

The Thrive Leads plugin and all your settings, leads, conversion analytics, and other data are stored directly on your WordPress website. The downside of this is that you’re responsible for your site security and backups to prevent losing that data.

In other words, if anything happens to your WordPress site, it will also affect the campaigns you’ve spent hours perfecting.

On the other hand, OptinMonster is a standalone app that lives on its own website. To create your lead generation campaigns, you log into your OptinMonster account:

OptinMonster Login 800 wide min 1

And all your campaigns are stored there, separately from your WordPress site.

But, adding your campaigns to WordPress is as simple as using the connector plugin. In the OptinMonster WordPress plugin, you can also choose additional settings for displaying your campaigns on certain blog posts, categories, and tags. We’ll get more into those Display Rules below.

For now, it’s important to know that OptinMonster doesn’t just work on WordPress sites but on any website.

That means you can use the same campaigns on your Shopify or BigCommerce store, Blogger or Wix blog, Squarespace site, or a static HTML website. There’s even a separate OptinMonster Shopify app with extra targeting options.

Why use a standalone app instead of a plugin?

Here are a few important considerations:

  • Automatic Cloud Backup: No need to worry about losing your data since it’s in the cloud already
  • Fast and Reliable: The speed of your optin forms doesn’t depend on your web hosting company’s speed
  • Doesn’t Use Up Website Storage Space: Since your campaigns live in the OptinMonster app, they don’t use up your website storage
  • Manage Multiple Websites in One Place: You can move or copy campaigns between sites, and much more

So if you’re looking for a Thrive Leads alternative that works on non-WordPress sites, OptinMonster is your best bet.

But what if you only need a WordPress plugin? Let’s take a look at a few other important factors to help you decide, starting with campaign creation.

OptinMonster vs. Thrive Leads: Campaign Creation

How easy is it to create a new popup or other campaigns in OptinMonster and Thrive Leads?

Let’s take a look at OptinMonster’s campaign creation process first.

After logging in, you see a list of your connected sites on the left, with all the campaigns you’ve created for that website in the middle.

To create a new campaign, click the Create New Campaign button at the top:

OptinMonster Create a New Campaign min 1

You can choose from 5 different campaign types:

  • Popup
  • Fullscreen
  • Slide-in
  • Floating Bar
  • Inline
OptinMonster Campaign Types

But from there, you have all kinds of other campaigns you can build, such as:

  • Sidebars
  • Content Lockers
  • Coupon Wheels
  • Countdown Timers
OptinMonster Campaigns

So with those 5 campaign categories, you can build 9 different campaign types!

Plus, OptinMonster has over 50 pre-designed templates available, each with a unique design and layout. You can filter these designs based on your needs, even selecting templates that work exceptionally well for your mobile visitors:

OptinMonster Mobile Template Filters min

And each campaign type has several unique templates available. For example, here are a few of the designs available for floating bar campaigns:

OptinMonster floating bar templates

You can also design and code your campaigns from scratch using OptinMonster Canvas technology.

All right, now let’s see how that compares to the Thrive Leads campaign creation process.

In the Thrive Leads dashboard, you can build the following types of campaigns:

  • In content
  • Lightbox popups
  • Post footers
  • Ribbons (like a floating bar at the top)
  • Screen fillers
  • Scroll Mat
  • Slide-in
  • Widget (Sidebar Forms)
  • Customize your own
Thrive Leads Campaign Types min

For the most part, these are the same campaigns you can build with OptinMonster. However, Thrive Leads changes many of the industry-standard campaign names, and we’re not sure why.

A screen filler campaign with Thrive Leads, for example, is the same thing as a fullscreen campaign with other companies.

Once you choose your campaign type, you’re redirected to the WordPress dashboard. You then need to re-select the same campaign you just started to create. Honestly, that’s annoying for user experience (UX).

To help users navigate the process, there’s a small popup that says Next Step: Add a form:

Thrive Leads Next Step Add a Form min

But it would be more helpful to be taken directly to the editor. It’s hard to imagine that a user would want to create a campaign without making any modifications whatsoever.

Then, after this, you’re taken to a new screen where you need to click Create Form and then Name Your Form.

And then you’re taken to another dashboard.

Again, that’s annoying.

At this point in the Thrive Leads campaign creation process, you need to know what you’re doing to move forward. To edit your new form type, you need to click the pencil icon off to the side to edit.

We’ve enlarged this part to help you out:

New Lead Form Thrive Leads min

Now a new screen opens up with your campaign editor. Here’s where you finally choose your template:

ThriveLeads Choose your template min

There were a few things that we don’t love here. First, it takes way too long to get from Create a form to the campaign editor itself.

With OptinMonster, it’s 1 click. With Thrive Leads, it’s several clicks and a redirect with a new window popup, which is unnecessary.

Then there are the templates. Though they have a decent variety (still less than OptinMonster), there’s no filter for templates, and they appear in no particular order.

And finally, there’s the learning curve to get comfortable with the software. For example, when you are in the editor, the left-hand side graphic has vague directions on how to add elements:

ThriveLeads Optin Campaign min

But, to do so, you need to go all the way to the very tiny icons on the opposite side of the screen which don’t even 100% match the directions:

Thrive Leads Optin Campaign Direction Icons min

None of this even mentions the fact that we chose the first template, which is, for some reason, explicitly designed for Yellowstone National park.

While we’re sure this is helpful for Yellowstone’s marketing staff, we can’t imagine that it’s a popular choice for most of their market.

And look, we don’t want to come off as critical of Thrive Leads. But creating optin campaigns is our specialty, and we know how easy it is supposed to be. So when we see it over-complicated, it sticks out to us like a sore thumb.

Now is where our team starts to get confused. We simply want to add a button to the campaign. But we have to stop what we’re doing to look up how.

Here’s why:

When you finally do track down the Add Elements icon from the top right-hand corner, you get a list of elements you can add to the campaign. One of those is a Button that you drag and drop where you’d like.

This functions a lot like OptinMonster’s Button element, or so we thought. Because when we tried to add a button here in the bottom of the right-hand corner:

Add a button with Thrive Leads min

It ended up coming out here in the center of the campaign:

Thrive Leads Insert Button min

And we still can’t figure out why.

This happens with many of the elements we’re trying to insert, and, at some point, we have to call it. So here’s a list of the elements that, in theory, you can add to any Thrive Leads campaign:

  • Text
  • Image
  • Button
  • Columns
  • Background
  • Content Box
  • Template Symbols
  • Logos

They also have a large variety of Building Blocks with features like icons, countdown timers, content reveals, and many more.

So even though Thrive Leads has many element options we like, our biggest problem is getting those options in the right place and easily formating our campaign.

Again, we build and modify optin campaigns every single day, so we don’t expect things to be this complicated.

Dropping elements into your OptinMonster editor, on the other hand, couldn’t be easier. You simply locate the element you want from the Blocks section on the left-hand side menu. We’ve got tons of options, including:

  • Button
  • Chat Box
  • Countdown timer (static and dynamic)
  • Dividers
  • Custom HTML (for unlimited customization)
  • Icons
  • Images
  • Optin Fields
  • Spacers
  • Text
  • Video
  • Yes/No buttons
Blocks for OM min

Then you drag and drop your selection into place:

Countdown Timer Drag and Drop min

And with OptinMonster, it actually goes where you placed it. 😉

Then you can edit any element you put into your campaigns:

OptinMonster lefthand side editing tools

We built our campaign editor to hit 3 primary needs. We want it to be:

  • Intuitive
  • Flexible
  • Powerful

With our drag and drop builder, we’re happy to say that we accomplish all 3! Because the editor is so easy to use, you can make loads of different campaigns that serve different purposes without wasting hours in the design process.

This is also particularly helpful when running A/B split tests. With OptinMonster, you can create a campaign, run an A/B split test, and modify one aspect of your duplicated campaign in a matter of minutes. Not hours.

Again, intuitive, flexible, and powerful.

Now that we’ve seen how the basic campaign creation process works let’s take a look at your options for displaying them to the right audience at the right time.

OptinMonster vs. Thrive Leads: Targeting & Triggers

The more personalized and targeted your campaigns are for each visitor, the more effective they’ll be.

So, what kind of targeting options do you get with OptinMonster vs. Thrive Leads?

Let’s take a look at Thrive Leads.

But first, let’s clarify a few key terms: Lead Group, Target, and Trigger.

A Lead Group is a collection of campaigns that will share the same rulesets.

A Target is the type of visitor you want to attract, such as everyone coming from a specific region or specifically from mobile, for example.

A Trigger is a user behavior that will force your campaign to appear.

Ok, with those out of the way, let’s dive in. You can decide where a Lead Group should appear by clicking on the gear icon on the right:

thrive display settings

Then select the blog posts, pages, categories, or tags you want your Lead Group to appear on. Again, you’re selecting targets (not triggers) for your Lead Group here.

thrive lead group display settings

Note that these target settings will apply to all campaigns in the Lead Group (popups, headers, inline campaigns, widgets, and so on).

So let’s say you want your popup to appear on one post, but your inline campaign to display on another, they’ll need to be in separate Lead Groups.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to duplicate optin form types to a separate Lead Group or move it from one Lead Group to another.

And if this all sounds complicated, that’s because it is. Well, we think so, at least. And there’s more.

You can choose your campaign triggers separately for each campaign, even in the same Lead Group. Just edit the campaign and then click the setting underneath the Trigger column.

By default, your popups trigger to display immediately once the page loads, which isn’t great for conversion rates.

thrive trigger settings

If you want to change the default, you can select one of the following options:

thrive trigger options

Ok, now let’s look at how OptinMonster handles campaign targeting and triggers with Display Rules.

OptinMonster’s advanced Display Rules are what make it such a powerful conversion optimization and lead generation solution. You can select whatever Display Rules you need while creating your campaign.

These are a handful of the targeting options you can choose from:

  • Current URL path
  • Pages viewed
  • Visitor’s device
  • Visitor has opted in to/not opted in to/closed/not closed
  • Visitor is new/returning
  • Visitor’s location
  • The URL query arg
  • A cookie
  • The referrer URL
  • Visitor’s ad-blocker
  • Current URL hash
OptinMonster Targeting Options 1

Targeting your campaigns for specific pages is only the beginning.

If you want to fine-tune your lead generation to get the most conversions, you can do that here.

You can use OptinMonster to set up advanced targeting rules like:

  • Visitors who already opted in to another campaign of yours or to visitors who ignored a specific previous offer
  • Brand-new visitors, or visitors who’ve been to your site before
  • Visitors in a specific geographic location (great for retail stores and location-specific offers, or GDPR compliance)
  • Visitors who clicked on a link to your site from social media, a guest blog post on a specific site, or a particular ad campaign
  • Visitors who have landed on a particular landing page such as a pre-sell or sales page
  • Visitors who are using ad-blocking software
  • Visitors who have viewed 3 or more pages on your site (or whatever number you choose) which ensures that only interested people will see it

And so much more. Plus, all of these options listed above (and more) are conveniently located on the same page, so you don’t need to jump around the site to create the rules:

OptinMonster Conditions min

This opens up a lot of advanced options for skyrocketing your email list and conversion rates.

And if you want to add a new ruleset (that can quickly be saved and added to another campaign), you can do that in 1 click:

Add New Ruleset with OptinMonster min

But targeting isn’t the only key to conversions. You also need to make sure that people are seeing your campaigns at the right time.

You can do that with OptinMonster triggers to select when your campaign should appear:

  • Time on page or time on site
  • Exit detected
  • Visitor clicked MonsterLink™
  • Distance scrolled
  • Visitor inactive time
  • Current day, time, date, or month

One thing that makes OptinMonster’s Display Rules so powerful is that you can easily combine different rules.

For example, you could make sure to target engaged and interested visitors by setting a lightbox popup to appear after scrolling down 50% of the page, but only if they’ve been on the page for 20 seconds.

And, like we already mentioned, you can even add different rulesets to set separate triggers for the same campaign, without having to completely recreate everything from scratch.

This kind of fine-tuned targeting isn’t just overly complicated with Thrive Leads. It’s downright impossible.

A Quick Word on Mobile Lead Generation

Did you know that over half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices?

That means if you don’t have an effective strategy for capturing leads on mobile, you could be ignoring most of your potential buyers.

So which lead generation solution is the most powerful when it comes to mobile lead generation: OptinMonster or Thrive Leads?

Both OptinMonster and Thrive Leads allow you to create campaigns that target mobile users.

OptinMonster is unique in that it also has several features designed to super-charge your mobile conversions.

One of those is the powerful InactivitySensor™ which detects user behavior (or lack thereof) on mobile. This means you can deliver a targeted campaign at the precise moment your visitor is about to abandon your site.

Combined with OptinMonster’s MonsterEffects™, which include animations and sound effects, these features make OptinMonster a proven solution for converting mobile visitors:

Now, what happens to those leads after they fill out your forms? Let’s take a look at Thrive Leads vs. OptinMonster integrations.

OptinMonster vs. Thrive Leads: Native Integrations

Of course, even the most powerful lead generation tool won’t help you if it doesn’t work together with your existing marketing stack.

After all, it defeats the point of automation if your software solutions don’t work together.

So, how do OptinMonster and Thrive Leads measure up when it comes to integrations?

Both offer integrations with the most popular email marketing service providers like Mailchimp, Constant Contact, AWeber, and many more.

But if you’re looking for support for more advanced software, Thrive Leads won’t help.

OptinMonster has the edge with these advanced integrations:

  • Conversio
  • Customer.io
  • Eloqua
  • Emma
  • Klaviyo
  • Marketo
  • Pardot
  • Sendloop
  • SharpSpring
  • TotalSend

None of which Thrive Leads offers.

OptinMonster has over 30 native integrations for your favorite email marketing service providers. Plus, OptinMonster also offers webhooks and custom HTML form integrations, so you’re never limited by what marketing technologies you can use.

That’s not all. You can also add as many integrations as you want to each campaign with OptinMonster’s Lead Sharing. This feature makes it easy to automate internal lead management or share leads with joint venture partners.

Now let’s look at how easy it is to manage accounts with each company.

Account Management & Support

If you have:

  • multiple websites
  • many campaigns

Then Thrive Leads does not make it easy for you to manage.

Thrive Leads is strictly a WordPress plugin, so managing multiple sites is a hassle because everything is separate. You need to login to each website to access your campaign dashboard.

And for every site you have, you need to give users separate login information and set up different administrative roles for each site, even if one user is using all your sites.

This creates a huge risk for losing passwords and keeping content (not to mention employees) organized.

Plus, Thrive Leads offers so many user roles that it can get confusing!

There are 6 user roles:

  • Super Admin: Access to all the network admin functions
  • Administrator: Access to all the Administrator functions of the site
  • Editor: Can manage and posts and pages, including those of others
  • Author: Can manage and publish their own posts
  • Contributor: Can write and manage, but not publish
  • Subscriber: Can only manage their own profile

On the other hand, OptinMonster gives you plenty of account management features to organize your campaigns and manage multiple users.

In the OptinMonster dashboard, you can:

  • Manage multiple websites from one dashboard
  • Duplicate and move campaigns between your websites
  • Search through your campaigns, and drag & drop to reorder your website list
  • Archive campaigns for later to keep your dashboard clutter-free
  • Trash campaigns and recover them within 90 days if you made a mistake

That last one is important. With Thrive Leads, if you accidentally delete a campaign and its data, it’ll be permanently deleted. But not so with OptinMonster.

And with OptinMonster sub-accounts, you can give access to your co-workers, clients, and others you work with.

As the account administrator, you can set user roles to decide who else can view, create, or publish campaigns. This is a great feature for agencies, who can give each client access to their own campaigns while preserving the privacy of other clients.

There are 4 different roles:

  • Viewer: Can view, but not make changes to, campaigns for a specific website or websites
  • Author: Can create, but not publish, campaigns for a specific website or websites
  • Manager: Can create and publish campaigns only for the assigned website or websites
  • Admin: Has full access and permissions for everything
OptinMonster Invite a User

Plus, there’s also an Activity Log so you can monitor every action taken on your account by each user.

Finally, let’s look at one last section for our ThriveLeads vs. OptinMonster comparison before seeing which software is more suited for your needs.

Documentation and Support Comparison

With any software, it’s important to have access to fast and helpful support if you have a question or need help.

Let’s take a look at how OptinMonster vs. Thrive Leads documentation and support measure up.

Thrive Leads Documentation and Support

The Thrive Leads plugin is by Thrive Themes. Thrive Themes has documentation on their site to help you get started with their themes and plugins.

thrive knowledgebase

Unfortunately, many of their tutorials are available in video form only. If you need written documentation for accessibility reasons or because you prefer to read instead of watching a whole video, you won’t always be able to find the help you need.

As you can see in the screenshot above, if you need further help, you’ll have to post in the support forum. You can post your issue or question as a new thread, and get a response from a Thrive Themes team member.

Keep in mind that your thread will be visible to all other Thrive Themes members, so you’ll need to be careful not to post private information in the forums. Also, be careful with your screenshots as you may accidentally include pictures with your WordPress site’s administrative details.

OptinMonster Documentation and Support

OptinMonster documentation features 200+ articles that walk you through everything from creating your first campaign, to integrating with dozens of email services providers, to advanced lead generation techniques like setting up MonsterChains to display campaigns based on your visitors’ response to other campaigns.

OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and OptiMonk
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

Which Is Right for You?

Are you looking for the most effective tools to grow your email list, reduce cart abandonment, and turn website visitors into customers? Not sure whether OptinMonster or OptiMonk is the right solution for you?

OptiMonk and OptinMonster are both tools that can help you lift sales and grow your email list. If you’re not familiar with their features, the similar names can make them difficult to tell apart.

But don’t make the mistake of assuming they’re the same.

In fact, there are some BIG differences between the two. Choosing the wrong tool can mean missing out on a ton of revenue.

To make sure you’re investing in the right tool and getting the results you need, we wrote an in-depth post to help you compare OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk.

OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk: Campaign Types

Of course, the most essential feature of any lead generation software is the types of campaigns you can create.

What kinds of popups and other campaigns can you actually make with OptinMonster and OptiMonk?

Let’s take a look at OptiMonk first. OptiMonk allows you to create 4 different campaign types:

  • Fullscreen
  • Popup
  • Nanobar
  • Sidemessage (similar to OptinMonster’s Slide-In)

OptiMonk has 112 popup templates to choose from, as well as a blank option you can use to add your own code:

OptiMonk Popup Templates min

“Nanobars” are sticky bars that appear at the top or bottom of the browser, and stay there as the visitor scrolls. They are the same as OptinMonster’s floating bar campaigns.

OptiMonk has 30 templates for those, plus an option to code your own:

OptiMonk Nanobar templates

Then they have 29 “Sidemessage” templates. These campaigns actually don’t show up on your website’s sidebar. They are like sticky popups that appear off to the side of your page and stay there as the visitor scrolls down the page.

Again, if you’re familiar with OptinMonster’s Slide-In campaigns, they are similar to those (though taller in length):

OptiMonk Side message min

Finally, OptiMonk has “Fullscreen” campaigns with 40 templates to choose from.  Fullscreen campaigns are like regular popups, but they take over the entire screen:

OptiMonk Fullscreen Choose a Template

Now let’s take a look at your campaign choices in OptinMonster.

OptinMonster choose your campaign min

In the OptinMonster app, you choose from several different campaign types:

  • Popup: an effective and popular campaign that grabs attention
  • Fullscreen: a fullscreen campaign with a call to action that can’t be ignored
  • Slide-In: similar to OptiMonk’s “sidebar” campaigns, these slide in from the side of the browser
  • Floating Bar: sticky footer or header bars that stay in place as your visitors scroll
  • Inline: these embeddable campaigns can be placed within your site’s content or sidebar

But with these 5 types of campaigns, you can do so much more, such as:

  • Sidebar Forms
  • Content Lockers
  • Coupon Wheel Optins
  • Countdown Timers (static and dynamic)
OptinMonster Campaigns min

Each type works on any size screen (desktop, tablet, or mobile) and has plenty of beautifully designed templates to choose from.

OptinMonster has over 50 templates, each of which can be instantly turned into Yes/No campaigns (which we’ll look at more closely later). Here are just a few:

OptinMonster Templates

And here’s a quick look at some of OptinMonster’s designs for Floating Bars:

OptinMonster floating bar templates 1

As you can see, OptinMonster also offers quite a few powerful campaign types that aren’t available with OptiMonk. Let’s take a look at those…

2 Types of Inline Campaigns: In Your Content or In the Sidebar

Used correctly, popups are powerful tools for lead generation and conversion optimization.

But what happens when a visitor closes your popup? If they change their mind, how can they sign up for your email list?

Smart business owners will give them the option to subscribe even if they didn’t opt into the popup.

The best way to do this is by placing a static campaign on your website. You can do this either on the sidebar of your page or embedded directly in your content.

Let’s start with sidebar campaigns.

When you place a sidebar optin form on your site, you turn every page into a lead generation opportunity. Sidebar Forms look like this:

OptinMonster sidebar widget 1 min

Your users get to see the content on your website without any interruptions, and you get loads of email signups every month!

If you’re only using popups on your website, instead of a variety of campaigns, you could be missing out on hundreds of leads. In other words, Sidebar Forms (not offered by OptiMonk) are a great way of catching low hanging fruit.

The other type of sidebar not offered by OptiMonk is an Inline campaign embedded directly in your content. BlogTyrant uses an Inline campaign at the end of their post to boost signups:

Again, these are great because they’re static campaigns. That means they’re always on your page regardless of triggers and targets.

By using these static campaigns along with other dynamic ones (campaigns that open when a user scrolls 50% down your page, for example), you’re truly maximizing your conversion rates.

At OptinMonster, we give you all the tools you need to make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunity to convert visitors to subscribers and customers.

Two-Step Yes/No Optin Forms

You may have noticed that some campaigns above feature a signup form asking for an email, while others have simple buttons with no optin fields to fill in.

That’s because some of the forms, the ones with only buttons, are Yes/No campaigns. They add an additional step before asking for an email address to help increase your conversion rates:

OptinMonster YesNo Campaign 1

Now, you might think that adding an extra step to your campaign means lower conversions, but Yes/No campaigns have the opposite effect!

And that’s thanks to the Zeigarnik Effect, which suggests that people who begin an action are more likely to complete it. So a visitor who clicks the Yes button is more likely to continue the process and sign up for your email list.

It’s like how a good salesperson uses small talk to start the conversation rather than diving into the pitch. Because if they can get you talking first, you’re more likely to allow the conversation to continue.

Yes/No campaigns begin an engaging conversation with your cold traffic, which makes them more likely to become warm leads.

OptiMonk has a few popup templates that have Yes/No buttons (also called two-step or multi-step optins) that come with the default design. These are spread out through their templates, and you need to search for them manually to find them.

There’s no filtered option to pull them up quickly.

But with OptinMonster, you’re not limited like that. You can actually enable the Yes/No view for ANY campaign you choose with the simple click of a button.

Go to the Yes/No feature at the top of your campaign editor and click the toggle switch to Display a Yes/No View:

YesNo display in OptinMonster Editor

Boom. That’s it!

You now have an incredibly powerful Yes/No campaign ready to grow your email list. And this is an effective campaign to use.

A Yes/No optin like this one by Salt Strong converts 10% of of all visitors who comes to their website:

19 saltstrong optinmonster mobile optin slidein

And another one of our clients, ChinaImportalincreased conversions from 2% to 20% just by adding a Yes/No step to their optin form.

By clicking the toggle to enable a Yes/No campaign to any of our templates, you can see HUGE increases in your conversions.

If you’re serious about growing your business, you definitely don’t want to miss out on Yes/No campaigns.

Content Locker

There’s another feature that OptinMonster provides its users that isn’t available with OptiMonk: a Content Locking campaign.

Content Locking OptinMonster Editor

Content Locking campaigns are super powerful because they lock away your most valuable content until the visitor enters their email address. That means you can have regular content for casual browsers, and premium content for your subscribers.

And the best part is, you can add this function to any piece of content currently on your site. So if you have great content, you’ve already done the hardest part.

We’ve seen sites like TradingStrategyGuides get 11,000+ subscribers in just 1 month with 1 Content Locking campaign.

And Whole Whale converts a whopping 21.42% of all visitors with this obfuscating content locker:

OptinMonster Content Locker min 1

Like we said, it’s super powerful.

Content locking is another quick-win tool you’re going to want if you’re serious about building your email list.

Event Countdown Timer

Another important feature that’s worth a mention here is the countdown timer.

OptiMonk does have a countdown timer. You can enter how many hours and minutes the countdown timer starts with. But, the date or time is always fixed:

OptiMonk countdown timer min

OptinMonster also has a countdown timer you can add to any campaign using the drag and drop builder.

Countdown Timer Drag and Drop

You choose the length of the timer in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

OptinMonster Countdown timer min

But what if you want your timer to count down to an event, like the end of a holiday sale?

Both OptinMonster and OptiMonk have that option, too. Which is really effective at creating a sense of urgency.

And when combined with OptinMonster’s campaign scheduling feature, this is an excellent tool for:

  • Boosting event registrations
  • Promoting holiday sales and special offers
  • Advertising webinars, conferences, and more

LifterLMS added a simple countdown timer like this to their pricing page and unlocked $23,700 in sales in just 5 months.

Ok, so both companies have countdown timers. So what?

OptinMonster pushes the concept further than OptiMonk by giving you the choice of also making your countdown timer dynamic:

Dynamic Countdown Timer

A dynamic countdown timer means that the date or time for your countdown isn’t fixed. It simply begins the first time your user sees a campaign.

So if you want each user to have a full 7 days to take advantage of a promotion, you can give all of your audience that unique experience. When one visitor comes on a Monday, they’ll get 7 days to claim their promotion.

And when another visitor comes on a Tuesday, they’ll also get a full 7 days to claim their promotion.

This is a remarkably useful tool at not only increasing your overall conversion rate but also improving your audience’s user experience (UX).

Plus, with our MonsterLinks™, you can easily use these dynamic (or static) countdown timers as part of a promotional email campaign, too.

Ok, so after you’ve designed your campaign, the next step is to decide who should see it.

OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk: Campaign Creation

What do your visitors see after they submit their email address or click on one of your campaigns?

The moment after a visitor subscribes is a huge opportunity. That’s because they’ve already shown interest in what you have to offer, they’ve given you their email address, and they’re ready to take the next step.

With the right success message, you can take advantage of that opportunity to deepen your new relationship even more.

So, what kind of success message options do OptinMonster and OptiMonk give you so you can take advantage of this opportunity?

For most of their templates, OptiMonk allows you to edit the button text and decide whether the button should close the popup, redirect to another page, jump to a page, or call:

OptiMonk success page min

OptinMonster, on the other hand, gives you a few more advanced options.

You’re able to choose an action for every button or optin form in your campaigns, including:

  • Go to a view
  • Show a different campaign view
  • Redirect to a URL
  • Click to call
  • Close the page
  • Reload the page
  • Open in a new window
OptinMonster success page options min

For every campaign template with OptinMonster, there’s a matching success view. It’s also completely customizable with the drag and drop builder.

OptinMonster Success View editor min

You can easily customize your success view to:

  • Offer an immediate digital file download
  • Display a video to make a personal connection and give your visitors further instructions
  • Entice your new subscribers to like your Facebook page or follow you on Twitter
  • Instruct visitors to complete the double optin signup process and whitelist your emails

…and lots more

OptinMonster also offers a few more advanced options for making the most of your success messages:

  • Smart Success: Avoid annoying your visitors by providing smart subscriber recognition. This is a great way to recognize people who have already signed up for a previous offer so you can entice them with something new.
  • Success Tracking and Retargeting Scripts: Serve a Facebook ad pixel, AdWords pixel, or whatever script you want when users subscribe, so you can easily retarget warm leads and put your marketing strategy on auto-pilot.

This is a huge opportunity that you don’t want to miss out on.

Campaign Targeting and Triggers

The more personalized your campaigns are for each visitor, the more conversions you’ll get.

So, what kind of targeting tools do OptinMonster and OptiMonk offer?

Both OptinMonster and OptiMonk offer powerful targeting options like:

But OptinMonster alone offers these more advanced features:

OptinMonster Targeting Options

Let’s take a closer look at how these targeting options can skyrocket your conversions and boost your revenue.

WordPress Category and Tag Targeting

If you’re using WordPress, this is another conversion-boosting trick you definitely want in your toolbox.

By targeting your campaigns based on the type of content a visitor is viewing, you’re giving them exactly what they’re interested in at the exact moment of interest.

Interest-based campaigns are incredibly high-converting, so don’t miss out on this feature!

And/Or and Multiple Rulesets

OptinMonster’s Display Rules are what make it such a robust conversion optimization and lead generation solution.

OptinMonster gives you full control over your campaign with the ability to add “and/or” conditions, plus multiple rulesets. Here’s how it works:

In one ruleset, you select all the triggers that you want for your campaign to appear. All the triggers you choose for that ruleset need to be fulfilled for it to appear.

For example, if you select “after 10 seconds” and “after scrolling 50% down the page,” the campaign will only trigger if the user has been on the page for 10 seconds AND scrolled 50%.

But you can also choose an “or” rule so that the campaign will appear if either condition is met.

optinmonster add or rule

But what if you wanted to display this campaign with different triggers on another page?

You could decide to show the campaign sooner, or have it triggered with Exit Intent® technology on a page that has a high bounce rate from organic searches.

To find those bounce rates, you simply need to check with Google Analytics. Then you can adjust your campaign’s rulesets to include Exit Intent® to keep time on page longer.

You can create as many separate rulesets (not just rules) as you need.

optinmonster rulesets

This gives you the flexibility to target multiple segments of your audience with one campaign.

OptiMonk, on the other hand, lets you add rules but not rulesets. They also only give you the “and” option, rather than the “and/or” conditions to your rules.

It’s a small difference that can have a significant impact on your overall conversion rates.

OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk: Accounts & Support

If you manage multiple websites or have clients you create campaigns for, then OptiMonk won’t make it easy for you.

You have the option to share your account only with other OptiMonk users. That means that ALL users and clients need to pay for separate OptiMonk accounts to access yours, even if they don’t need one.

This is the only way to share access to campaigns without giving them access to your login information, billing details, and more.

Or you can use their Agency Partnership to manage all of your clients’ accounts in one place. This will let you share campaigns and templates individually with each of your clients.

But that comes with a substantial fee with increases for site-wide traffic.

So unless you’re a professional agency looking to build campaigns for other businesses (instead of your own), this may not be the smartest choice.

On the other hand, OptinMonster offers Sub-Accounts with four levels of user roles. You can easily give access to your co-workers, clients, and others you work with:

OptinMonster Invite a User min

They don’t need to pay anything, and it’s secure: they only get access to what they need.

There are 4 different roles:

  • Viewer: Can view, but not make changes to, campaigns for a specific website(s)
  • Author: Can create, but not publish, campaigns for a particular website(s)
  • Manager: Can create and publish campaigns only for the assigned website(s)
  • Admin: Has full access and permissions for everything
User Role for OptinMonster min

This is an excellent feature for agencies, who can give each client access to their own campaigns while preserving the privacy of other clients.

There’s also an Activity Log so you can monitor every action taken on your account.

Finally, how easy is it to get started with OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk? Let’s take a look at the documentation and support available for each.

Documentation and Support Comparison

It’s important to have easy access to the information you need so you can get started as quickly as possible.

That means in-depth and easy-to-understand documentation and fast and helpful support.

Let’s see how OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk measures up.

OptiMonk Documentation and Support

OptiMonk has a resource section on their website that provides answers to their most common questions.

OptiMonk Help Center min

And here’s the honest truth about their resource section: they’ve made some significant improvements since the last time we visited.

Seriously, they’ve come a long way!

For most questions, they have full, straightforward answers. If you have further problems or need help, you’re still limited to email.

OptinMonster Documentation and Support

Ok, so let’s be clear. We’re very impressed with OptiMonk’s changes to their resource center but hardly intimidated.

OptinMonster’s documentation features 200+ articles that walk you through everything from creating your first campaign, to integrating with dozens of email services providers. Or from advanced lead generation techniques like setting up MonsterChains, to display campaigns based on your visitors’ response to other campaigns.

In other words, if you’ve got a question, we’ve got the answer somewhere on the site.

Plus, we have useful video tutorials on most of our documentation to visually show how to solve your problem. Videos are something that, as far as we can tell, aren’t the central part of OptiMonk’s support.

Here’s what most of our documentation pages looks like:

OptinMonster Documentation Page Examples

If your question isn’t answered in the documentation, you can open a private support ticket or email a support team member one-on-one.

Or you can now live chat with us during business hours in real-time.

OptinMonster support 2

Official support hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am–5 pm EST. Typically, tickets are responded to within 24 hours and even faster during official support hours.

OptinMonster vs. OptiMonk: The Final Word

Look, here’s the deal: you can do a lot with both software.

But you can do more with OptinMonster.

Not only that, but our pricing is more approachable for small to medium-size businesses.

OptiMonk’s Essential package starts at $39/month. That gives you unlimited campaigns 2 domain, 30,000 page views (for your whole site), and A/B testing.

For the same price, you can get started with OptinMonster’s Pro package with unlimited campaigns, A/B testing, 50,000 campaign views (regardless of your site’s traffic), content locking, device targeting, 3 domains, and so much more!

Note: The information above reflects our pricing as of the writing of this article. For current pricing, check our pricing page.

OptinMonster vs Sumo

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and Sumo
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

Which Is Right for You?

Are you looking for the most effective marketing tools to grow your email list and turn website visitors into subscribers and customers? Not sure whether OptinMonster or Sumo is the right solution for you?

Sumo and OptinMonster are both popular lead generation and conversion optimization tools, but they’re definitely not the same.

In fact, there are some pretty significant differences between them. And choosing the wrong one could hold back your growth.

To make sure you’re getting the solution you need, read our in-depth OptinMonster vs. Sumo comparison below.

We took a deep dive into every feature. So, to help you navigate each section more quickly, we’ve created a table of contents:

  1. OptinMonster vs. Sumo: Dashboard & Account Management
  2. Campaign Types and Templates Comparison
  3. Mobile Lead Generation Comparison
  4. Campaign Targeting & Triggers Comparison
  5. Success Message Comparison
  6. Documentation and Support Comparison
  7. Bottom Line: OptinMonster vs. Sumo

Ready? Let’s dive right in.

OptinMonster vs. Sumo: Dashboard & Account Management

First things first, there are some fundamental differences in how OptinMonster vs. Sumo dashboards work.

Both OptinMonster and Sumo can be used on any website, such as WordPress, Shopify, Magento, and even static HTML sites.

But the big difference between the two companies is where you manage your campaigns and your campaigns’ creation.

OptinMonster is a standalone app that lives on its own website. To create your optin campaigns, you’ll log in to your account on the OptinMonster app website.

OptinMonster Login 800 wide min 2

After you log in, you can manage your account, see all the sites you’re using OptinMonster on, and start creating new campaigns.

OptinMonster Campaign Dashboard min 2

The cool thing is that you can display your campaigns on any type of website. And doing so is super simple.

To connect your website to your OptinMonster account, you can just add a bit of code to your site. You can use the official OptinMonster WordPress plugin or Shopify app, which gives you even more control over when and where your campaigns display.

But more on that below.

If you have multiple websites, it’s easy to manage them all together here in your OptinMonster dashboard. That’s one of the many benefits of having your campaigns hosted in a standalone app.

In your OptinMonster account you can:

  • Search through your campaigns
  • Manage multiple websites
  • Move or duplicate campaigns from one website to another
  • Drag and drop to reorder your list of sites
  • Collapse or expand all campaigns for each site
  • Archive campaigns for later use

And with OptinMonster sub-accounts, you can easily give access to your co-workers, clients, and others you work with.

There are 4 different roles:

  • Viewer: Can view, but not make changes to, campaigns for a specific website(s)
  • Author: Can create, but not publish, campaigns for a specific website(s)
  • Manager: Can create and publish campaigns only for the assigned website(s)
  • Admin: Has full access and permissions for everything
OptinMonster Invite a User 1

As you can see in the image above, you can invite other users to your account with just the click of a button. And no, they won’t have to pay for an OptinMonster account to access the campaigns.

This is an excellent feature for agencies, who can give each client access to their own campaigns while preserving the privacy of other clients.

There’s also an Activity Log so you can monitor every action taken on your account. So even if your client has full power over campaign creation and customization, you still know what they have or haven’t changed.

On the other hand, Sumo works differently. You can log in to the main Sumo.com website, and then you’re redirected to your account page.

When you’re logged into Sumo, you can’t get to their site’s homepage if you want to look for resources or information.

That’s because, again, you’ll be automatically redirected to your account. To access the homepage, you’ll need to log out of your Sumo account first.

You can manage your account billing and other details on the Sumo site, but you can’t create any popups or other campaigns there.

Sumo account information min

So, right away, you can tell that your account information and campaign creation are decentralized. You handle one directly from the Sumo website, and the other somewhere else (like in your WordPress dashboard, for example).

At the Sumo website, you can add users to your account, but you can only choose between Admin and User roles.

That means a User has access to ALL of your site’s apps and settings. This is less ideal if you’re an agency working with various clients.

But aside from account management on the website, what about where your campaigns are either created or stored?

Today, we’ll be using WordPress as our hosting platform example since it’s one of the most popular options for website creators.

To start building popups and other campaigns, you’ll have to first add Sumo to your site. Then you can start creating campaigns from inside your website’s dashboard.

Here’s how that looks on a WordPress site:

sumo wordpress dashboard

From there, you can click on My Apps to access the actual Sumo dashboard. If you’re a first-time user, this is where you’re prompted to build your first campaign:

Build Your First Campaign with Sumo min

Just click Create Form to get started.

Before moving forward, let’s quickly recap how both companies allow you to access the dashboard and manage your accounts:

  • Sumo: Your account information is hosted on their website while your campaign creation is hosted on your site’s platform
  • OptinMonster: Both your account information and campaign creation are hosted in the same standalone app

Now let’s look at how OptinMonster vs. Sumo compare with their campaign types and template selection.

Campaign Types and Templates Comparison

So, what kinds of popups and other campaigns can you create with OptinMonster and Sumo?

Let’s take a look at Sumo first. Sumo allows you to create 7 different campaign types:

  • Cart Casino
  • Popup
  • Scroll Box
  • Inline Form
  • Click Trigger Popup
  • Welcome Mat
  • Smart Bar

But before you choose the one you want, you have to specify your goal.

Sumo Choose Your Goal min

The goal you choose will limit the template options you see for your campaign. For example, the Welcome Mat option is only available if you select the Collect Emails goal.

We’ve discussed this elsewhere, but our team has mixed feelings about this setup.

On the one hand, we understand that it’s important to clarify your goals before creating your optin. That way, you’re crystal clear on what you want to accomplish.

But, on the other hand, you may have a particular design in mind that you’ll miss if you choose the wrong goal. Since templates you’ve never seen change depending on your goal, you might miss some options that fit the campaign you’re trying to build.

That means you could be losing lots of time customizing a template they already have for another goal.

That’s why OptinMonster allows you to select the campaign type you want right away.

prod comp type

In the OptinMonster app, you choose from 5 different campaign types:

  • Popup
  • Fullscreen
  • Slide-in
  • Floating Bar
  • Inline

But from these 5 options, you can build others, such as:

  • Countdown timers
  • Sidebar Forms
  • Content Lockers
  • Coupon Wheel Optins
  • Yes/No campaigns which you can use for any of the options listed above
OptinMonster Campaigns 1

OptinMonster also offers some powerful campaign types that aren’t available with Sumo. Let’s see what those look like.

Two-Step Yes/No Optin Forms

You’ll notice when building a Collect Emails campaign in the Sumo list builder, there are two tabs at the top. These allow you to view your Subscribe form and your Success view.

sumo tabs

OptinMonster gives you the option to add a third view: a Yes/No form, also called a two-step or multi-step optin.

And activating this form is easy. Just click the Yes/No button at the top of your editor and toggle a switch to activate in the left-hand side menu:

YesNo display in OptinMonster Editor

This adds another step to your campaign. Now your visitor has to click the Yes button before they see the optin form. Then they can enter their email address and subscribe.

You might be thinking, why add another step? Wouldn’t that make it harder to subscribe and turn people away?

Actually, 2-step optins increase conversions because of a neat psychological trick called the Zeigarnik Effect. Studies have shown that when a person initiates a process, they’re more likely to complete it.

A simple Yes/No optin like this one by Salt Strong converts 10% of all visitors on the entire website:

19 saltstrong optinmonster mobile optin slidein 1

By enabling a Yes/No form to your optin process, you can see HUGE increases in your conversions. And the best part?

You can enable a Yes/No form on all of our templates by default without upgrading your plan.

That means you have over 50 pre-made templates with Yes/No capabilities if you want them. And they’re ready to go out-of-the-box:

OptinMonster YesNo Campaign

This is a crucial feature you don’t want to miss out on.

Content Locker

Here’s another powerful feature OptinMonster offers: you can turn any Inline campaign into a Content Locking campaign. That means you can block a part of your premium content until a user subscribes.

You can either make the content blurry (obfuscated) or remove it altogether. And enabling this feature is also simple. All the editing tools are found conveniently in your Inline Setting:

Content Locking OptinMonster Editor min

This is a great type of optin form that locks away your most valuable content until the visitor enters their email address. We’ve seen sites like TradingStrategyGuides.com get 11,000+ subscribers in just one month with ONE content locking campaign.

And check out this simple content locking campaign by Whole Whale which converts a whopping 21.42% of all visitors:

OptinMonster Content Locker min

Content locking is another quick-win marketing tool you’re going to want, especially if you’re serious about improving your email list building strategy.

Dynamic “Evergreen” Countdown Timer

Another important feature that’s worth mentioning here is the countdown timer.

Sumo does allow you to create campaigns with a standard countdown timer. You enter the end date and time, and the timer counts down to that fixed time.

coutndown timer buzz sumo min

OptinMonster has a countdown timer, too, but it adds an extra option that can be even more effective: a dynamic countdown.

Instead of selecting an end date, you choose the length of the timer in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Dynamic Countdown Timer min

The dynamic timer is customized for each visitor. The countdown begins as soon as the visitor hits the page. That means that each visitor will see a different countdown and give all your users the same amount of time to take advantage of a deal.

At this point, you might be wondering, “What’s the point of having a timer that’s different for every user?”

The answer is simple: urgency.

Creating a sense of urgency for your visitors is one of the best ways to boost your conversion rate. When our purchasing decisions are based on urgency, we lean towards the “take action” route, because we’re afraid of missing out.

This is a useful marketing tool for promoting sales and discounts. LifterLMS added a dynamic countdown timer to their pricing page and unlocked $23,700 in sales in just 5 months.

And thanks to our awesome shareable MonsterLinks™ you can use these countdown timers in your email campaigns to build that sense of urgency.

So far, we’ve looked at the types of campaigns you can create in OptinMonster and Sumo, but there’s another aspect of campaign creation you can’t ignore: mobile campaigns.

Campaign Targeting and Triggers Comparison

The more personalized and targeted your campaigns are for each visitor, the more effective they’ll be.

So, what kind of targeting options do you get with OptinMonster vs. Sumo?

With Sumo, you can add rules for your campaigns to show or hide based on URLs, pages, devices, referrer, and more.

Sumo Display Rules

OptinMonster has all these options and more.

OptinMonster’s Display Rules are what make it such a powerful conversion optimization and lead generation solution. Here’s a sample of the targeting options you can choose from:

  • Time on page/Time on site
  • Exit detected
  • Visitor clicked MonsterLink
  • Distance scrolled
  • Visitor inactive time
  • Current day/time/date/month
  • Current URL path
  • Pages viewed
  • Visitor’s device
  • Visitor has opted in to/not opted in to/closed/not closed
  • Visitor is new/returning
  • Visitor’s location
  • The URL query arg
  • A cookie
  • The referrer URL
  • Visitor’s ad-blocker
  • Current URL hash
OptinMonster Targeting Options 2

Plus, you can use OptinMonster to set up advanced targeting rules like:

  • AdBlock Detection: If you’re a publisher who relies on ad revenue, you’ll need AdBlock detection to deliver a targeted message to visitors using ad blockers
  • OnSite Follow Up Campaigns®: This smart technology recognizes how visitors interact with other campaigns on your website, so you can follow up with targeted campaigns designed to get them to take action
  • WordPress Category and Tag Targeting: With the OptinMonster WordPress plugin, you can target specific WordPress categories and tags and display campaigns targeted to each reader’s unique interests

These features open up a lot of advanced options for skyrocketing your email list and conversions.

But targeting isn’t the only key to conversions. You also need to make sure that people are seeing your campaigns at the right time.

First, let’s see how Sumo lets you trigger your popups:

sumo triggers

As you can see, your options for popup triggers are limited. You can choose to display after a number of seconds, or when the visitor starts to leave your site.

Now let’s take a look at how that compares to OptinMonster.

Here are OptinMonster’s Display Rules for when your campaign should appear:

prod comp display rules

There are a few more options here, including the InactivitySensor we talked about earlier, plus a Scroll Trigger, which helps you to display targeted campaigns to visitors who are already interested in what you have to offer.

But one of the most important differences that OptinMonster offers (not offered by Sumo) is our AdBlock detection technology.

We already mentioned this above, but it’s worth checking out in more detail. That’s because over 616 million people use AdBlocker or similar software to prevent popups.

This means that a large part of your audience may never even see the campaigns you create. Even if the offer will add value to their lives.

Most people who install Adblock technology do so for one simple reason: to prevent spammy popups on sites while they stream music or television.

For the most part, users are happy to receive genuine promotions that offer them value in the form the content or discounts.

With our AdBlock detection technology, you can target campaigns to users who have ad blockers enabled:

OptinMonster adblocker min

Then, you can create a simple Yes/No form asking your visitor to disable the software:

Adblock detected with OptinMonster min

Does this work?

Around 77% of people will turn off ad blockers if you ask because they only want to block the intrusive ads.

That’s a lot of missed revenue if you choose a company that doesn’t offer this technology. Thankfully, with OptinMonster, you won’t have that problem!

Now that we’ve seen targeting and trigger features for both companies, let’s take a look at what happens AFTER your visitors convert…

Success Message Comparison

What do your visitors see after they submit their email address or click an OptinMonster campaign?

The moment after a visitor subscribes is a huge opportunity. At this point, they’ve already shown interest in what you have to offer, and they’re ready to take the next step.

With the right success message, you can take advantage of that opportunity to deepen that new relationship even more.

So, what kind of success message options do Sumo and OptinMonster give you so you can take advantage of this opportunity?

When you’re designing your campaign in Sumo, you can design and customize your success view in the editor:

Success view editor with Sumo min

Or, instead of displaying that success view, you can choose other actions, such as:

  • Change the click action to redirect the visitor
  • Download a content upgrade
  • Request push permission
  • Use tracking pixels, subscribe pixels, or click pixels
  • Auto-close your campaign after X number of seconds

OptinMonster allows you to do this as well. Plus, with every one of our unique templates, you can customize every visual aspect of your success view:

Success Page in OptinMonster min

Success messages are great for:

  • Enticing your new subscribers to like your Facebook page or to follow you on Twitter
  • Offering an immediate digital file download
  • Displaying a video to deepen your connection with them
  • Instructing visitors to complete the double opt-in signup process and whitelist your emails
  • Suggest related products or content

And more!

OptinMonster, though, also offers another advanced option for making the most of your success messages: Smart Success.

OptinMonster’s Smart Success feature goes far beyond simply not repeating the same campaign to returning visitors. It presents new offers related to what your visitor has already subscribed to or purchased.

Once your visitor has seen a campaign for the first time, our Smart Success technology can later help you do 3 things:

  • Offer discounts and coupons to existing customers
  • Present new offers related to what someone has already purchased
  • Retarget customers and track their performance with ad pixels

As you can imagine, this is super effective at boosting your overall revenue. And if you want to go the extra mile, you can use our Dynamic Text Replacement technology to address returning customers by name!

As we begin to wind this comparison page down, let’s look at how easy it is to get started with OptinMonster vs. Sumo.

In other words, let’s check out the documentation and support available for each.

In other words, let’s check out the documentation and support available for each.

Documentation and Support Comparison

It’s important to have access to fast and helpful support if you have a question or need help getting started. Let’s see how OptinMonster vs. Sumo support measures up.

Mobile Lead Generation

If you don’t have an effective strategy for capturing leads on mobile, you could be ignoring most of your potential buyers.

That’s because mobile use is on the rise, having quickly surpassed desktop users. Just think about the last time you went out in public. You likely saw the majority of people looking down at their phones.

And if you didn’t see that, it’s probably because you were looking at yours.

The real question, then, is which lead generation solution will let you improve your marketing strategy and target those mobile users: OptinMonster or Sumo?

Both OptinMonster and Sumo allow you to create campaigns that target mobile users. But using OptinMonster, you can fine-tune these settings much more.

With OptinMonster, you can make your favorite template perfect for mobile by filtering that option at the template selection stage:

OptinMonster Mobile Template Filters min 1

Or if you want the optin to only show to mobile users, that’s as simple as adding a display rule.

OptinMonster also has a powerful InactivitySensor, which detects user behavior on mobile so you can deliver a targeted campaign to mobile users when they’re about to abandon your site for good:

OptinMonster Visitor Inactive Time min

Combined with OptinMonster’s MonsterEffects, including animations and sound effects, you have an awesome way to grab attention and convert mobile visitors.

So, how effective are these at generating leads from mobile visitors?

Using OptinMonster’s mobile lead generation tools, Salt Strong was able to lift conversions 185% and gather 1,000 new leads every week.

The Eczema Company also switched to OptinMonster for their mobile campaigns and now converts 13.76% of all mobile visitors.

Besides the InactivitySensor, what other triggers and targeting options do OptinMonster have, and how do they compare to Sumo? Let’s take a look.

OptinMonster vs. Sumo: Which Is Right for You?

So, which lead generation and conversion optimization tool is your best bet?

If you:

  • Are serious about building a targeted email list
  • Need to reduce cart abandonment and recover lost sales
  • Want to maximize your conversions and revenue

…then OptinMonster is the tool you need.

OptinMonster’s more powerful features like Content Locking, Yes/No Campaigns, InactivitySensor, AdBlocking technology, and other unique features are effective for growing your email list, generating leads, and instantly lifting revenue.

Plus, our pricing is competitive.

Sumo has a free version, but if you want to accomplish anything significant with their tools, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan. That costs $39 per month if you buy a yearly subscription:

Sumo Pricing page min

Those are the only two payment methods available: all or nothing.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, has more flexible pricing that allows businesses to scale at their own pace:

NoteThe prices from the image above reflect a sale at the time the article was written. Head over to our pricing page to see if those deals are still available!

Our Plus package allows you to do everything and more than you can with Sumo. From there, as you gain more impressions, you can upgrade if needed.

The point is that we never like to charge our users for features they don’t need or impressions they aren’t getting.

So at the end of the day, if you’re serious about boosting conversions and increasing revenue, OptinMonster is 100% the tool you need.

OptinMonster vs Bloom

Looking to ramp up your website conversions? Let’s break down the pros and cons of OptinMonster and Bloom
to see which one is the best option for you.

To help you navigate, we’ve also created a table of contents:

Which Is Right for You?

Are you looking for the best WordPress popup plugin to grow your email list as quickly as possible? Not sure whether you should use OptinMonster or Bloom by Elegant Themes?

Both Bloom and OptinMonster are popular solutions for growing your email list, but there are some significant differences between the two.

The goal is to make sure you choose the WordPress plugin that best suits your needs. So, in this article, we’ll give you a detailed comparison of OptinMonster vs. Bloom.

Optin Campaigns vs. Bloom: Campaign Types

Of course, the main features you’ll want to compare are the types of popups and other campaigns you can create with OptinMonster vs. Bloom.

Let’s take a look at Bloom first. Bloom specializes in creating optins, which means you’ll create email signup forms exclusively.

bloom new optin screen

Bloom allows you to create 6 different optin types:

  • Pop up
  • Fly in
  • Below Post
  • Inline
  • Locked Content
  • Widget

OptinMonster allows you to create all of those, as well:

OptinMonster Campaign Types

However, you might notice that OptinMonster uses the word “campaigns” instead of “optins.” That’s because OptinMonster isn’t just limited to simple email signup forms. We also specialize in creating a variety of campaigns for different marketing purposes.

We’ll show you more in the Campaign Design and Customization Comparison section below.

In the OptinMonster app, you choose from 5 different campaign types:

  • Lightbox popup
  • Fullscreen
  • Slide-in
  • Floating Bar
  • Inline

Now, at first glance, you’re probably thinking that’s less than Bloom. After all, they have 6 optin types, and OptinMonster only has 5 campaign types, right?

But the fact is that you can do a lot more with these 5 campaign types than any other conversion optimization kit, Bloom included. You can create sidebar widgets, Fullscreen or Floating bar optins (not offered by Bloom), build Content Locking optins, and much more:

OptinMonster Campaigns

At the end of the day, what’s important to remember is the difference between creating a simple “optin form” and a full-fledged “campaign.” Bloom only lets you do the former, whereas OptinMonster includes both.

OptinMonster vs. Bloom: Campaign Creation

Both OptinMonster and Bloom have some great templates to choose from so let’s take a closer look at how the platforms handle campaign design and campaign customization.

Campaign Design

If you’re building your email optin forms with Bloom, you may notice that they have a lot of templates.

In fact, it may even appear that Bloom has more templated options available than OptinMonster.

And while they definitely do have some killer template designs, it’s worth pointing out that many of these stem from one original design with slight variations:

Bloom Campaign Templates

OptinMonster, on the other hand, has over 50 unique form templates to choose from:

Templates for OptinMonster

Plus, each template can be formatted for all the optin form types that you want to build. For example, here are the templates for our Floating Bar campaigns:

OptinMonster floating bar templates 2

You’ll also notice that you can filter your templates depending on your needs (including an awesome new Mobile filter):

OptinMonster Mobile Template Filters min 2

We even have one template the is designed to grow your followers on social media:

Social Media Template OptinMonster

This one works well for most companies right out of the box. These templates come stock full with other cool options, too. For example, you can choose templates with a countdown timer to build scarcity, a marketing tactic proven to improve eCommerce sales:

Countdown timer example in OptinMonster min

Not only that, but you can also design and code your own campaigns from scratch using OptinMonster Canvas technology. So if you’re very particular about the campaigns you need, you can totally customize every aspect of your campaign and form designs.

Campaign Customization

After you choose your template, you can begin to customize your design.

Here’s how that looks in Bloom:

Bloom Design your optin form min

You won’t be able to see your optin form as you make changes, so you’ll need to constantly click the Preview button at the top right to make sure you’re happy with how your campaign looks.

Then, as you scroll down, you’ll see plenty of options to change the colors, fonts, and layout of your optin form.

Optin Styling by Bloom min

You can even choose the style of the form edge if you’d like, as well as a field to customize the text people see after they subscribe.

Bloom Template Edge Style min

To be honest, they’ve got some neat things you can do to customize your optin form. We were definitely impressed with the sleekness and professional look of some of their designs.

But OptinMonster’s campaign editor is quite a bit different. After choosing your template, you’re taken to an editor where you can see your campaign as you design it. That means there’s no need to click a preview button until you’re totally finished making changes:

OptinMonster Editor New min

To customize your form, you can click anywhere on the campaign in the editor. Then, all your editing tools appear on the left-hand side of the screen. You can replace images, edit the text, change colors, and format your campaign how you see fit.

And the best part is that you get to see your changes live, as you make them.

OptinMonster Change Text in the Editor min

You’ll also notice there are a ton of options to customize your campaign. You’re not limited to just minor style and color changes.

For example, you can turn any of our templates into a Yes/No campaign, which features buttons instead of an email address field:

Yes No display in OptinMonster Editor

Though you would think that adding a step to your optin form would lead to fewer conversions, the opposite is actually true. Yes/No campaigns have been proven to increase conversions thanks to the Zeigarnik Effect.

According to the Zeigarnik Effect, people who begin an action are more likely to complete it. That means that visitors who click the Yes button are more likely to continue the process and opt into your email list.

With our Yes/No editor view, you can customize every aspect of your Yes/No campaign:

Edit your yes no campaign with OptinMonster

You have plenty of other options here to customize your Yes/No campaigns, too. You can remove the No button to emphasize the Yes option. And don’t worry, your customers won’t get trapped in your popup. They can still close it any time they want!

Also, you can customize a specific action for each button. You can:

  • Display your optin form
  • Close the campaign
  • Redirect to a new page

That last action is an awesome strategy for sales and promotions.

But with all these options, OptinMonster gives you the ability to create all kinds of marketing campaigns that extend far beyond signup forms.

You can use OptinMonster to build your email list, but also to:

  • Promote seasonal sales
  • Tell shoppers about cool deals like free shipping or 30-day trials
  • Drive traffic to your highest-converting blog post
  • Highlight specific benefits to overcome sales objections
  • Redirect your email subscribers to specific campaigns with shareable MonsterLinks™

And so much more.

Check out some of our case studies to see how real users create high converting campaigns that come in all shapes and sizes.

Kennedy Blue, for example, was able to increase their sales by 50% with simple OptinMonster popups like this one:

Ok, now let’s take a look at what happens after your visitors convert.

Success Message Comparison

A lot of people don’t give enough importance to the Success Message of their campaigns.

But the moment after a visitor subscribes is a huge opportunity. That’s because they’ve already shown interest in what you have to offer, and they’re ready to take the next step.

With the right success message, you can take advantage of that opportunity to deepen the new relationship even further.

So, what kind of success message options do Bloom and OptinMonster give you so you can take advantage of this opportunity?

Bloom gives you the option to change the success message that people see after subscribing, or you can redirect them to another page. It’s super crucial to customize this step of your optin campaign, so it’s great that they offer it!

Bloom Edit Success Message min

As for OptinMonster, we include a formatted Success View with every template. That means that you get the same level of customization with your Success View as the rest of your campaign:

Success Page in OptinMonster min 1

Again, this is one area of your campaign that you don’t want to skimp out on to save time. Success messages are great for:

  • Enticing your new subscribers to like your Facebook page or follow you on Twitter
  • Offering an immediate digital file download
  • Displaying a video to deepen your connection with them
  • Instructing visitors to complete the double optin signup process and whitelist your emails

And lots more.

Check out even more ideas for using OptinMonster success messages. Again, this is a huge opportunity to build your audience and turn casual subscribers into loyal customers.

After you’ve designed your campaign, the next step is to decide two things:

  1. Who should see it?
  2. What should trigger it?

Let’s start with Bloom vs. OptinMonster targeting features first.

Campaign Targeting and Triggers

The more targeted your campaigns are for each visitor, the more effective they’ll be.

So, what kind of targeting options do you get with OptinMonster vs. Bloom?

When creating your optin form in Bloom, you have a few options for targeting different pages on your site. Page-level targeting is more effective than using the same popup on every page.

That’s because you can customize your popup campaign to match the content of the page for which your visitors are showing the most interest:

Display on Settings by Bloom min

You can also scroll down and choose specific categories, posts, or pages to display your optin form on, or to exclude them from.

Dispaly on these pages by Bloom min

This page-level targeting is an excellent way of making sure your readers are only seeing optin forms that they’ll be interested in.

And OptinMonster has all these options, as well. But we also have quite a few more. In fact, this is really one of our strongest points.

OptinMonster’s Display Rules are what make it such a robust conversion optimization and lead generation solution. Take a look at the targeting options you can choose from:

  • Current URL path
  • Pages viewed
  • Visitor’s device
  • Visitor has or hasn’t opted in
  • Visitor is new/returning
  • Visitor’s location
  • The URL query arg
  • A cookie
  • The referrer URL
  • Visitor’s ad-blocker
  • Current URL hash

And way more (too many to list here, in fact).

But targeting your campaigns for specific pages is just the beginning.

If you want to really fine-tune your lead generation to get the most possible conversions, you can use OptinMonster to set up advanced targeting rules like showing campaigns to:

  • Visitors who have already opted in to another campaign of yours
  • New visitors to your site
  • Visitors in a specific geographic location (which is great for retail stores and location-specific offers)
  • Visitors who click on a link to your site from Facebook
  • Visitors who click on a guest post on a specific site or a particular ad campaign.
  • Visitors who are using adblocking software
  • Visitors who view a certain number of pages on your site (and that number is up to your discretion)
OptinMonster Targeting Options min

And, again, that only scratches the surface. This opens up a LOT of advanced options for skyrocketing your email list and conversions.

But targeting your visitors isn’t the only key to conversions. You also need to make sure that people are seeing your campaigns at the right time. These popup cues are known as “triggers.”

First, let’s see how Bloom lets you trigger your popups:

Bloom Load in Settings min

There are some great options here that can help you to show your popups at the right time and grow your email list.

For example, showing a popup after your visitors finish reading your post is likely to convert higher than a popup that appears before you get a chance to see the content you came for.

And like we said, Bloom has a ton of options to help you trigger a campaign.

Here are OptinMonster’s Display Rules for when your campaign should appear:

  • Time on page/Time on site
  • Exit detected
  • Visitor clicked MonsterLink
  • Distance scrolled
  • Visitor inactive time
  • Current day/time/date/month

In other words, any of Bloom’s triggers can be easily accomplished with OptinMonster as well. Plus, there are a few more powerful options.

OptinMonster is famous for its signature Exit-Intent® technology, which detects user behavior and prompts them with a targeted campaign at the precise moment they are about to leave.

This is a valuable feature because, on average, over 70% of people who leave your website will never return. With an exit-intent popup, you can convert those abandoning visitors into email subscribers and paying customers.

Exit Intent Technology OptinMonster

We’ve seen OptinMonster users get incredible results with our exit-intent® technology. This includes companies like DealDoktor, who saw a 2100% increase in conversions when they started using exit-intent popups, or Yoast, who saw their email list double in a month.

If you only ran one campaign for your entire site, it should definitely use exit-intent® technology. But let’s be honest, you definitely want more than just one type of campaign, right?

So let’s turn our attention to how you can manage all the different campaigns you build.

OptinMonster vs. Bloom: Integrations & Support

What kind of websites will OptinMonster and Bloom work for?

Let’s start with Bloom:

Bloom Homepage

Bloom is strictly a WordPress plugin, so you can only use it on WordPress sites. All your settings and optin forms are stored on your WordPress site, so you’ll need to create your own backups.

That’s because if your site is hacked or you lose access to it, you’ll lose all your forms, settings, and conversion rate analytics. This is definitely a worst-case scenario, but it’s always better to be prepared.

OptinMonster, on the other hand, is a standalone app that lives on its own website. To create your popups and other campaigns, you’ll log in to your account on the OptinMonster website, instead of creating them within the WordPress dashboard:

OptinMonster Login

You can display your campaigns on any type of website, even a static HTML site. OptinMonster is easy to implement with just a bit of code.

There’s also an OptinMonster WordPress plugin that automatically connects your OptinMonster account to your WordPress site. That gives you more control over where your campaigns display (but more on that below). OptinMonster also works with any WordPress theme.

There are several benefits to using a standalone app like OptinMonster as opposed to a dedicated plugin like Bloom:

  • Automatic Cloud Backup: No need to worry about losing your data since it’s in the cloud already
  • Fast and Reliable: The speed of your optin forms doesn’t depend on your web hosting company’s speed
  • Doesn’t Use Your Storage Space: Since your campaigns live in the OptinMonster app, they don’t use up your hosting storage

Bottom line: OptinMonster works seamlessly with all WordPress themes and plugins.

Documentation & Support

While both OptinMonster and Bloom are easy to use, it’s important to have access to fast and helpful support if you have a question or need help.

Let’s take a look at how OptinMonster vs. Bloom support measures up.

Elegant Themes Documentation and Support

Elegant Themes has documentation on their site to help you get started with Bloom. They have loads of articles on the basics of how Bloom works and how to create optin forms. Many of their tutorials also include videos.

Bloom Plugin Documentation min

Thanks to the simplicity of the Bloom plugin, these tutorials should be enough to get you started creating optin forms.

If you need further support, you’ll have access to the Elegant Themes support forum as long as you’re a member. You can post your issue or question as a new thread, and get a response from an Elegant Themes team member.

Keep in mind that your thread will be visible to all other Elegant Themes members, so you’ll need to be careful not to post private information in the forums.

Before posting for help, you need to disable all your plugins, which might be impractical for some users.

Bloom Community Board min

Elegant Themes doesn’t make any promises about their response times, but most tickets are responded to within 24 hours.

Finally, they also have a new system where you can contact them via live chat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:

Bloom Live Chat min 1

This doesn’t mean instant support or feedback, however. If you need specialized help that a canned response doesn’t cover, you’ll be connected with a member of Bloom’s customer support.

This usually takes about a day.

OptinMonster Documentation and Support

OptinMonster documentation features 200+ articles that walk you through everything from creating your first campaign to integrating with dozens of email marketing service providers. It also includes advanced topics like setting up MonsterChains to display campaigns based on your visitors’ responses to other campaigns on your site.

If your question isn’t answered in the documentation, you have several support options including live chat, email, or a detailed support tickets:

Official support hours are Monday through Friday, 9am–5pm EST. Typically, tickets are responded to within 24 hours and even faster during official support hours.

Account Management Features Comparison

The fact of the matter is that Bloom is a good plugin for WordPress if you’re working with one site and just a few campaigns. Oh, and you’re the only one who needs access to them.

But what if you have:

  • multiple websites
  • many campaigns
  • more than one user managing them

Then, honestly, Bloom probably isn’t the best tool for you.

Bloom is strictly a WordPress plugin, which means everything happens from your WordPress dashboard. It also means managing multiple sites is tricky because everything is separated.

If you have multiple users on your WordPress site and want to limit or control how they can edit your Bloom optins, there’s simply no easy way to do that.

These are some of the problems that OptinMonster has tried to solve from the beginning.

OptinMonster gives you plenty of account management features to organize your campaigns and manage multiple users.

In the OptinMonster dashboard, you can:

  • Search through your campaigns
  • Manage multiple websites
  • Drag and drop to reorder your list of sites
  • Collapse or expand all campaigns for each site
  • Archive campaigns for later

And with OptinMonster sub-accounts, you can easily give access to your co-workers, clients, and others you work with.

As an account administrator, you can set user roles to decide who else can view, create, or publish campaigns. This is a great feature for agencies, who can give each client access to their own campaigns while preserving the privacy of other clients.

There’s also an Activity Log so you can monitor every action taken on your account. This can be an excellent resource, especially when you’re training new employees.

OptinMonster vs. Bloom: The Final Word

Look, here’s the total honest truth:

We like Bloom, a lot!

They have some great designs, they’re easy to use, and their customer support is full of knowledgeable, helpful staff. In other words, even though they’re considered our direct competition, we’ve got nothing but glowing things to say about them.

If you have a WordPress site and simply need some straightforward optins to grow your email list, they’re worth considering.

But does that make Bloom the right choice for you? Well, that depends on your needs.

If you…

  • Have any kind of website (WordPress, Shopify, or any other platform)
  • Are serious about building a targeted email list
  • Need to reduce shopping cart abandonment and recover lost sales
  • Want to maximize your conversions and revenue

…then OptinMonster is the tool you need.

Plus, our pricing is simply unbeatable. OptinMonster’s basic plan is only $14 per month:

  • $14/month for Basic
  • $30/month for Plus
  • $47/month for Pro
  • $80/month for Growth

Bloom, on the other hand, is a 1-time payment of either $89 per year or $249 for lifetime access. This is an all-or-nothing approach that works for some companies, but we prefer tiered pricing. That way, you can choose what features you need and not be charged for extras you don’t.

OptinMonster is designed to help all levels of marketers boost their site’s traffic, grow their email list, and increase conversions. So whether you’re a beginner blogger looking to monetize your killer writing, or you’re a seasoned marketer with complex campaign needs, OptinMonster has the right tools for the job.

I hate popups, so I was hesitant to try one on my site. But the results from OptinMonster exit-intent popup speak for themselves. I doubled my subscription rate immediately without annoying my users. I haven’t had a single complaint. My only regret is that I didn’t start using OptinMonster sooner. I can only imagine how many subscribers I could have added to my email list! If you have a blog, then I highly recommend you start using OptinMonster. I’ve researched them all, and it’s the best in market.
